WoW MoP Classic Phase 1 DPS Class Specializations Ranking In PvE: How To Choose?

Posted: Aug 06, 2025 Views: 185

As you know, there are multiple classes available in MoP Classic, generally categorized by their roles in combat: tank, healer, and DPS. DPS, as the primary team damage dealer, can be further categorized as ranged or melee.

It’s important to note that regardless of your base class, when your character reaches level 10, you can choose a specialization to gain new abilities, allowing you to customize your character’s combat style and class playstyle.

With an average of three specializations per character, there are even more options for those looking to play a DPS role on a team. However, the optimal DPS class composition will vary across different Mists of Pandaria Classic phases and combat modes.

Since Phase 1 of the game is expected to continue for some time, this article will provide an overview of PvE DPS class specialization rankings for that phase.

WoW MoP Classic Phase 1 DPS Class Specializations Ranking In PvE: How To Choose?

S-Tier

In most MMORPGs, the S-Tier DPS class typically focuses on strong damage output, but in Mists of Pandaria Classic, the focus is also on the utility of the class’s skills and its ability to handle unique combat mechanics.

Survival Hunter

This class’s strength lies in its ability to deliver rapid damage even without sufficient gear, and its ability to access nearly any buff in the game through its pets.

This allows Survival Hunters to benefit from their unique versatility in dungeons and raids, regardless of the team composition. Furthermore, the class can complete a full rotation while moving without losing damage, making it particularly adept at handling certain unique mechanics.

Also, even if you’re farming WoW MoP Classic gold or earning other items as a Survival Hunter in solo gameplay, you can enhance your farming efficiency with these class-specific buffs.

Arms Warrior

While Arms Warrior’s damage output is impressive, its real strength in S-Tier lies in its exceptional utility skills, such as Skull Banner, Rallying Cry, Demoralizing Banner, and Vigilance.

It’s important to note that while Skull Banner’s cooldown is combined with Bloodlust window during raids, its effectiveness decreases significantly after three consecutive uses.

Unholy Death Knight

Like Survival Hunter, this class can deal significant damage in combat without requiring gear upgrades, and can utilize Soul Reaper to excel in fights focused on execution damage.

By comparison, among Unholy Death Knight’s other skills, Anti-Magic Zone, while valuable, isn’t as practical as other DPS class skills, and Gorefiend’s Grasp’s usefulness decreases rapidly with the addition of a second Death Knight.

A-Tier

Because of the game’s active balancing efforts, you’ll find that many classes can actually become A-Tier DPS classes due to their powerful performance, providing reliable support in your raids.

Windwalker Monk

While this class offers impressive damage output, its strengths and weaknesses are so pronounced that it ultimately remains in A-Tier category. While Windwalker Monk can deal cleave damage with Rushing Jade Wind, Storm, Earth, and Fire clones, it lacks utility.

Retribution Paladin

Retribution Paladin is somewhat similar to Arms Warrior, but it focuses more on providing pure defensive capabilities in combat through its dual Hand of Sacrifice and Hand of Protection abilities.

Additionally, the class’s Clemency and Devotion Auras provide magic damage reduction to the group, while also providing reliable single-target burst DPS. Retribution Paladin’s only drawback is its lack of significant cleave damage.

Elemental & Enhancement Shaman

Both specializations provide offensive buffs to their team through Stormlash Totem and defensive benefits from Ancestral Guidance. Elemental Shamans can also transition to a healing role as needed without completely changing their gear.

Balance Druid

Aside from Elemental Shaman, Balance Druid is another class that can play a healing role in A-Tier DPS. Its skills like Stampeding Roar, Heart of the Wild, and Tranquility all provide healing, while Bear Form also serves as a utility skill for handling emergencies in combat.

Subtlety Rogue

This class has made it to A-Tier thanks to its strong single-target damage output. Smoke Bomb and Tricks of the Trade provide additional utility, while Feint allows for consistent damage in raids.

Other Classes

All classes in this subtype offer similar damage output capabilities and generally offer average utility. If you choose these, simply focus on building on your reliable skills:

  • Shadow Priest
  • Arcane Mage
  • Frost Mage
  • Affliction Warlock
  • Destruction Warlock
  • Marksmanship Hunter
  • Beast Master Hunter

B-Tier

While DPS of the characters in this tier can’t compare to higher-tier characters, they can still be effective in special team fights by synergizing with teammates.

Frost Death Knights

In every way, this specialization is more of an alternative to Unholy Death Knight. Both offer reliable damage output and utility, but Frost Death Knight’s is ultimately less effective. If you’re not a fan of Unholy playstyle, you might want to give this class a try.

Other Classes

Feral Druids can fulfill a similar role to Balance Druids in suitable scenarios. Demonology Warlock is your only choice if you don’t like the other Warlock specializations. Assassination and Combat Rogues offer decent damage output.

In addition to the above specializations, there are several DPS classes not included in this ranking. Honestly, their performance in Phase 1 PvE combat is so mediocre that they don’t warrant separate tiers.

Of course, if you’re drawn to these DPS classes and don’t care about combat benefits, you can play them as long as your teammates are willing - in Azeroth, you’re always free!
