WoW MoP Classic Unholy Death Knight Guide: How To Use This Spec To Stand Out In Raids?

WoW MoP Classic Unholy Death Knight Guide: How To Use This Spec To Stand Out In Raids?

WoW MoP Classic will be officially released on July 21st, and now is a good time for us to prepare for it!

Choosing a suitable class and build is always a prerequisite for playing this new expansion. Whether you are an old player returning from WoW Cataclysm Classic or a beginner planning to embark on an Azeroth continent expedition for the first time, Unholy Death Knight is a wise choice.

Unholy DKs have always been very strong in the early stages of the game and have remained very competitive throughout the expansion. Not only are they an easy spec to play, but they also have excellent burst in both ranged and single-target combat, which makes them very powerful in advanced raiding.

Here, we will share everything you need to know about Unholy Death Knight in WoW Classic MoP to help you play this spec and lay a solid foundation.

WoW MoP Classic Unholy Death Knight Guide: How To Use This Spec To Stand Out In Raids?

Disease Snapshotting

But before understanding this class, we need to understand a key mechanism, Snapshotting.

These are skills with damage over time (DoT) effects that remember the stats and buffs your character had when they were cast, and apply those bonuses for the duration of the cast. So if your cast timed to coincide with a strong buff, it would result in a significant increase in damage.

In WoW Classic Mists of Pandaria, we snapshot two diseases, Blood Plague and Frost Fever, which is important because diseases make up the majority of the damage stats of Unholy DKs.

So, snapshotting diseases means that any strength and crit buffs you have are snapshotted the moment you apply a disease.

Strength and crit are the only stats that will be synced with disease snapshots. For example, if I have a Fallen Crusader Proc in my weapon enchants, and I apply a disease, my disease will be affected by  Fallen Crusader buff for the entire duration.

Since we actually apply diseases through Plague Strike, Unholy Blight or Outbreak. If I choose the talent, Plague Strike actually applies both diseases at once, which is the opposite of what happened in WotLK Classic and Cataclysm Classic.

So a typical start is that we first apply diseases with Plague Strike, continue the normal cycle, and then burst into snapshot diseases after getting as many power buffs as possible.

Ideally, all effects will trigger together before any of the buffs expire. Of course, some of this is affected by RNG. But that’s the basis of disease snapshots.

Battle Pet

In addition to this, as an Unholy Death Knight, we must consider that a large part of our damage comes from pets. Therefore, it is a good idea to spend some WoW MoP Classic gold to get a great battle pet, after all, it is a good helper during the battle.

It is worth noting that in Mists of Pandaria Classic, all our pets are now dynamic, which means that their power will change as buffs trigger and expire.

So, we will no longer cast Summon Gargoyle skill while waiting for procs. Instead, we want to try to use it before any procs, and before any unused trinkets or skills are used. This way, ideally, we can maximize the duration of all procs and power buffs.

In addition to this, during tank and spank fights, turn on all cooldowns in pre-potions to benefit from the longest possible buff window. Note that you can only use one potion per fight, and you can use a second one during the fight if you pre-cast before the boss fight.

Death Rune

Runes are one of the main sources of Unholy Death Knight’s abilities. For Frost, Blood, and Unholy, you want to always keep one of each rune charged, and avoid having two of the same type during rotation.

In addition to this, there is another rune type called Death Rune, which can be used as an alternative to the three standard rune types. Death Rune provides more flexibility, allowing Death Knight to use abilities from any rune spec without requiring a specific rune type.

Our Reaping passive is that whenever we attack with Pestilence, Festering Strike, Icy Touch, Blood Strike, or Blood Boil, the rune consumed becomes a Death Rune when activated.

However, since we already apply both diseases with Plague Strike, we no longer use Blood Strike in the rotation, and Icy Touch is rarely used now.

So, in effect, we get Festering Strike in single target situations, and Blood Boil or Pestilence in AoE situations. We want to convert our Blood and Frost Runes to Festering Strike, since we need one of each rune in our rotation, so that we can get more Death Runes.

Then, we use Death Runes with Unholy Runes, using them for Strike as much as possible.

The flexibility of Death Rune is very important for optimizing skill rotation, especially for Unholy DKs who can use it to cast Strike more frequently.

Two-Handed Weapons Are Preferred

For some WoW Classic players, dual wield weapon specs were the dominant playstyle for most of the expansion before Legendary gear.

However, this has changed with the rework of Rune Regeneration system, as runes no longer have independent cooldowns and Scourge Strike only consumes one Unholy Rune instead of an Unholy and Frost Rune. Therefore, dual wielding Unholy is no longer feasible and has become a thing of the past.

Now, Unholy can only be used with two-handed weapons. Compared to WotLK Classic, it has become one of the most important parts of our damage, because of better weapon performance and Scourge Strike’s damage increasing with weapon damage. This is why we no longer use the dual wielding Unholy playstyle that dominated in the past.

Other Tips

Here are other tips to help you better control Unholy Death Knight.

First of all, remember that positioning is important. So, make sure you attack from behind, which will increase your hit rate and reduce incoming damage by avoiding any frontal attacks.

Also, there are a few things to consider in the case of AoE and cleave damage. Because our diseases are continuous damage or DoT damage, it may not be worth spreading diseases to mobs if they don’t survive long enough.

It’s worth noting that not all AoEs count towards boss parses, so it’s important to understand the rules of each fight if you try to parse. You can improve your personal performance going into raids and stand out from the competition by analyzing your parses.

In short, this is all about Unholy Death Knight spec in WoW MoP Classic for now, which is perfect for beginners, as well as veteran players who want to improve their skill rotation. Whether you’re looking for extreme single-target damage, or want good personal defense and team combat capabilities in the raid phase, this class spec can bring you unprecedented experience!

Of course, if you want to fully master this gameplay, you need to understand the rules of the entire pet battle mechanism in advance so as not to make too many mistakes in the duel.

Based on this, we will bring you a comprehensive introduction to the background information of Mists of Pandaria Classic pet battles.

WoW MoP Classic Battle Pet Basics: Mastering Them Can Make You Get Interesting Experience!

What Is The Battle Pet?

In MoP, battle pets refer to those small animals that you can collect and utilize them for battle. In the regular Classic server, these animals already exist, but they have no combat power and cannot be cultivated, but MoP gives them a new meaning of existence.

To find and view your pets in the game, open your Pet Journal interface. The left side shows the pet, the right side is the pet battle slot, the upper right is Heal Pets ability, and the lower right is the entrance to participate in PVP pet battles.

The left interface will show you all the collected/uncollected pets. You can directly click on a pet to view its appearance and skills, or filter by source. In addition, hover the mouse over the pet model to see where it was obtained.

How To Unlock The Pet Battle Function?

To unlock this function and experience pet battles, you need to find your faction’s battle pet trainer in the game. After talking to them, they will give you a task, and you can learn pet battle skills after completing it.

  • Horde: Varzok in Orgrimmar
  • Alliance: Audrey Burnhep in Stormwind City

How To Catch Pets?

Wild battle pets roam in every area of Mists of Pandaria Classic map. To catch them, follow these steps:

  • 1. Turn on the Track Pets option on the minimap.
  • 2. Capturable battle pets will appear as yellow dots on the minimap.
  • 3. Walk up to a wild battle pet and right-click it to start a pet battle.
  • 4. Win to claim it as your own pet.

Once you have a battle pet, you can first battle against battle pet trainers or boss pets to get familiar with the mechanics and earn WoW MoP Classic gold. Once you have unlocked all three pet battle slots, you can start PVP pet battles.

Battle Pet Basics

Before you start a battle, you need to understand your pet’s attributes and skills so that you can better control them in battle and make them stronger by upgrading them.

Pet Level

The highest level of all battle pets in the game is level 25. You can increase your battle pet’s level by battling other wild pets or battle pet trainers. Put a low-level pet into the first pet battle slot to upgrade through battle.

Note that different areas have different levels of wild pets and battle pet trainers, so you need to choose the duel object according to your pet’s level. In addition, use items such as pet treat and Safari Hat to gain extra experience during battle.

Pet Skill

Each battle pet has up to six skills, each belonging to a specific pet family type. Skills will be unlocked one by one as the level is upgraded, and the unlocked skills will become stronger as the pet is upgraded.

However, no matter how many skills you unlock, you can only use three skills in a single battle, and you need to choose between two options through the battle pet slot.

Healing Pets

If your battle pets take too much damage while fighting or abandoning the battle, they will also die. To avoid losing your pets, heal or revive them through Heal Pets ability in the upper right of the Pet Journal interface when their lives are endangered.

Note that this skill has an 8-minute cooldown. If you need to heal/revive your pet during the cooldown, you can also do so by visiting the stable master or utilizing Battle Pet Bandage.

Capturing Pets Through Battles

If your pet damages an enemy pet in a wild pet battle, reducing its health to 35% or less, you can capture it and add it to your collection. However, to increase your chances of success, it is recommended that you set the following traps:

  • Trap
  • Strong Trap
  • Pristine Trap

Pet Quality

Similar to WoW Classic MoP items, battle pets are divided into different qualities, including poor, common, uncommon and rare. Although you will find trainers’ pets and boss pets of epic and legendary quality, the highest that you can get is rare.

The quality of the pets you can capture in the wild will be random, and their quality will remain unchanged after capture, but you can consume Battle Stones to improve their quality, as the higher the quality, the better the attributes of the battle pet.

Attributes are one characteristic of pets that affect their combat performance, including:

  • Health
  • Attack
  • Speed

Pet Family

All combat pets in Mists of Pandaria Classic have their own family, which determines the pet’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as a passive skill that can be utilized. All family types include:

  • Beast
  • Critter
  • Flying
  • Humanoid
  • Dragonkin
  • Undead
  • Aquatic
  • Magic
  • Elemental
  • Mechanical

I believe that with the above information, you can start to experience the combat pet mechanism in MoP Classic. If you want to unlock PVP pet battles as soon as possible, start catching and training your pets!
