Dune Awakening Sandworm Novel Settings: How Are Them Related To The Game?

The most amazing monster in Dune Awakening, and the most critical and representative creature in the entire worldview, is the monster swimming in the desert, Sandworm.
In the game, as long as the player moves slightly on the sand, the sound it makes can attract sandworms. This doesn’t sound reasonable at all, but it does fit the description of sandworms in the original book?
The Size Of Sandworms
Sandworms are the original life form on the planet Arrakis. According to Dr. Wellington’s research, the largest sandworm usually observed is about 450 meters. If you don’t have a relevant concept to know how big it is, then the largest known creature on Earth is the blue whale, which is about 33 meters in total, occupying only about 7% of the volume of the sandworm. In the famous monster movie Godzilla, Godzilla’s body is only more than 100 meters, about a quarter of the sandworm.
Sandworms are the origin and core of Arrakis culture, so in the past legends, it is mentioned that there are “grandfather sandworms” 750 to 1000 meters in Antarctic of Arrakis. You will encounter it in Deep Desert, but you can only see its big mouth like a hill.
Because of the limited research on sandworms, there are naturally many mysterious colors to describe this creature, especially the Fremen who regard sandworms as messengers of God. When you are swallowed by a sandworm for the first time, you will dream of a Fremen who will return all your Dune Awakening items. This is your only chance to recover the loss from the sandworm’s mouth.
Sandworms And Spices
So how did the sandworm come into being? Many people think that the drought and desertification of Arraki led to the emergence of this giant sandworm, but in fact it evolved through Sandtrout. Because Sandtrout will swallow the microorganisms and water of Arraki and produce the substance “early spice” (pre-spice mass), then once the water in the area is absorbed in large quantities, the land will become barren and then desertified, and a small part of Sandtrout will mutate and become sandworms.
As for the early spice accumulated underground to a certain amount, because its volatile gas has nowhere to escape, the pressure will cause a large-scale eruption, and this phenomenon is called “spice blow”. And this explosion will bring a large amount of early spice underground to the surface, and then after being baked and dried by the sun, it will eventually form spice, and the spice itself will enhance people’s abilities and become a very valuable item. The struggle of all forces on Arraki is basically around spice.
In the game, when you fly over Deep Desert in an ornithopter, you can sometimes see purple smoke erupting in the desert, which is spice blow. This is naturally a great harvest for players.
Sandworms’ Territory
Sandworms have a sense of territory, so you rarely see two of them in one place. So when they sense another one nearby, they will fight furiously, and will attack other species passing by, which is a great threat to Arraki.
In Dune Awakening, the red circles on the map represent the sandworms’ territory. Riding a sandbike in the desert or using any noisy equipment will attract them. When they get close, they will appear near you for the first time, and if you continue to make noise, they will appear next to you. Using Dune Awakening suspension belt will allow you to fly away from the sandworms, but their noise can also attract sandworms.
But the reason people can tolerate sandworms is that these creatures will bring “early spices” or “spices” to every corner of the desert, thereby nourishing more microbial communities that feed on “spices”, and then these microorganisms will absorb enough nutrients and continue to divide and grow into “sand trout”. Even dead sandworms will have their bodies decomposed into nutrients by microorganisms, further nourishing other plants and animals.
Sandworms And Bene Gesserit
But interestingly, the sandworm is very afraid of water. If it absorbs a certain amount of water, its body will become unstable, which will lead to the suspension of physiological functions. This is an extremely painful death process for the sandworm, and it may even be fatal. For this reason, this is why Sandtrout absorbs a large amount of local water, which is one of the keys to evolving into a sandworm.
But for the sandworm that dies in this process, the water will merge with its body cells, and then the liquid flowing out of the body will become a deadly poison. Some people call it “Water of Life”. The water of life is used by Bene Gesserit sisterhood to train their members. If you are a member of the sisterhood who drinks this poison and survives, you are eligible to become a godmother.
Although this part of the content is not fully restored in Dune Awakening, if you unlock Bene Gesserit skill tree, you can unlock the skills about toxins.
The above is about the setting of sandworms and Dune It is a fusion of the original and the original Awakening, but one of the most classic scenes, where Fremen ride on sandworms and use them for Wormiring, has not been restored. The producer promised to add this feature in subsequent updates.
