Diablo 4 Season 12 PTR Paladin Nerfs and Buffs Explained | Are Paladins Still Broken after Castle Changes?

Category: Diablo 4 Posted: Feb 04, 2026 Views: 1903

Diablo 4 Season 12 PTR has finally begun. Many players are worried that the removal of Sanctification system will lead to a decrease in build strength. On the other hand, while we have confirmed that Paladins will be nerfed, what will their strength be like after the nerf? Will it still be the strongest class?

Let’s take a look at all Paladin adjustments in PTR to see how it performs in the next season and what Paladin builds you should try.

Diablo 4 Season 12 PTR Paladin Nerfs and Buffs Explained | Are Paladins Still Broken after Castle Changes?

Skill Description Adjustments

Holy Light Aura

The skill description now clearly states that its damage benefits from attack speed. This is not a direct nerf or buff, but a clarification. Many players were previously worried that this mechanism would be removed, so this clarification means that this mechanism will be retained.

Sanctify

Sanctify’s damage bonus is fixed at 90%, even if you choose to upgrade it.

Conviction

The previous description contained a typo. The skill upgrade description has been adjusted to accurately reflect that it increases the attack speed cap, not the resolve cap.

Enhancements

Path of the Penitent (Passive)

The damage per stack of Path of the Penitent has been increased from 10% to 12%. Previously, choosing Coat of Arms provided an average damage increase of over 100%, while Path of the Penitent increased Zealot’s resource consumption but offered less damage. The adjusted Path of the Penitent now provides up to a 120% damage increase, making it competitive.

Defiance (Skill)

The official description mentions an increased frequency of DoTs on Rite of Prayer (from 2s to 1s), but this appears to be a typo, as this skill enhancement does not have a DoT effect; it likely refers to Rite of Thorns.

If it is indeed an adjustment to Rite of Thorns, then this effect is expected to be nearly doubled. This could be a significant buff to Thorns gameplay.

Paladin Unique Items

Three unique items for Paladins have been buffed.

Dawnfire

  • The skill description has been updated, indicating that the size of the aura surrounding the player will change.
  • Activating Holy Light now refreshes its duration, resolving its interruption issue in boss fights.
  • Paladin-specific unique items now have an increased chance to trigger Holy Light for double damage.
  • Buff duration has been increased, and indicators for buff stacks and duration have been added.

Sunbrand

Damage bonus doubled (from 30%-50% to 60%-100%).

Sundered Night

The passive skill Anointing passive affix has been replaced with "+2 to +4 Aura skill levels". Additionally, the bonus to "Holy Light Aura efficacy" gained through Tempering has been doubled, making Aura Paladins stronger.

Nerfs

Word of Sacrifice (Rally Enhancement)

Health costs increased from 15% to 35%. Such a high cost means that it can only be safely activated twice in the absence of healing. This nerf will severely impact the early-game leveling experience with this variant.

Pronouncement of Heaven (Spear of Heavens Enhancement)

  • Original effect: The cast of permanent Spear of Heavens automatically marks a Judgement and deals continuous damage on the battlefield.
  • Current effect: Now grants three initial spears that deal a percentage of damage, and these spears can be marked by a Judgment.

This change adds an extra step to Judgment build, as you need to manually mark the spears. This may cause a decrease in DPS using this Enhancement, but the exact amount of the decrease needs further testing.

Castle (Paragon Nodes)

  • Original effect: Increased damage dealt by an amount equal to 1.8% of your Armor value.
  • Current effect: Increased damage dealt by an amount equal to 125% of the damage reduction you gain from Armor.

Castle Legendary node is the core of this Paladin nerf. This node originally provided a very high damage multiplier. Due to the diminishing returns and cap on damage reduction (approximately 70-80%), this change will significantly limit the final damage bonus achievable by stacking Armor, impacting all Paladins that rely on this node, so overall nerfs to builds.

Furthermore, regarding this node, the developers have fixed an issue with snapshotting errors inside and outside towns (previously, gaining a bonus outside town would unexpectedly result in lost damage upon entering a portal). This fix is an enhancement for players familiar with the mechanics, but for most players, it simply makes Paladins more consistent.

What Paladin Builds Should You Play in Season 12?

The core of Season 12’s killstreak mechanic is Bloodied stacks and Bloodied weapons. These weapons will have an additional affix related to the season’s mechanics, the effect of which is related to maintaining a high killstreak. This means any build capable of clearing areas quickly will have a greater advantage in the new season.

You can try the following builds in Season 12:

  • Auradin Paladin
  • Hammerdin Paladin (Blessed Hammer / Arbiter Hammer)
  • Fist of the Heavens Paladin
  • Brandish Paladin
  • Evade Paladin (Arbiter Evade)
  • Wing Strike Paladin
  • Shield Charge Paladin

Since Season 12 buffed auras, Auradin Paladin might be a good choice. Another good option is Wing Strike Paladin, which allows for fast movement, enabling you to quickly accumulate kill streaks and kill streak rank.

Overall, while Paladins have received the expected nerfs, especially the changes to Castle nodes, their overall strength should still be superior to other classes. Many players on PTR will likely test the extent of Paladin nerfs, and you can also explore whether builds like Thorns or Judgment still have potential.

With some of the Paladin's passive abilities and the Paragon node being nerfed, gear becomes even more crucial in Season 12. You can buy the best Diablo 4 Paladin items for your builds from IGGM to make your Paladin an efficient demon slayer.
