Diablo 4 Season 16 Is a Fresh Start: What Actually Carries Over from Season 15?

PublishedPublished: Nov 02, 2026

Whenever our beloved Diablo 4 transitions between seasons, players often grapple with a crucial question: what happens to their characters, gear, and materials once a season ends?

As Season 16 approaches, understanding these rules in advance will help you decide what to keep and what to let go, ensuring a smoother start to your new journey.

Distinguishing Between Seasonal and Eternal Characters

In D4, characters are categorized into two types: Seasonal and Eternal.

Seasonal characters always start from scratch (Level 1) at the beginning of a new season. Eternal Realm does not reset to Level 1, though it does undergo certain changes as seasons shift.

For instance, as Season 15 nears its end, your seasonal characters will automatically be migrated to Eternal Realm, carrying over D4 gold, experience, and other assets they have accumulated.

You will find these characters in your Eternal character list, where you can choose to keep, organize, or delete them as you see fit.

Season 16 also offers a Rebirth option, allowing you to transition an existing Eternal character into the new season, effectively treating them as a fresh start.

Note, however, that any gear equipped on a character undergoing a Rebirth will be deleted; be sure to move any important items into your Stash before initiating the process.

Ultimately, any seasonal character you create for Season 16 will begin at Level 1. Since very few items carry over between seasons, it remains a completely fresh start.

Withdraw Only Stash Tab

Once your seasonal characters are migrated to Eternal Realm, a Withdraw Only tab will appear in your Stash, containing Diablo 4 items transferred from the previous season.

You cannot place new items into this tab, and its contents will be cleared out entirely at the end of the season.

If there is any gear or material you wish to keep, be sure to retrieve it beforehand. Otherwise, if the items are no longer useful, you can simply leave them to be removed during the cleanup.

For those who continue to play in Eternal Realm, this serves as an important opportunity to organize the assets you accumulated during Season 15.

Experience, Gold, and Paragon

When characters from a past season are transferred to Eternal Realm, their experience and gold are consolidated. Gold continues to accumulate, while experience is factored directly into your Paragon progression.

In other words, your gold balance will keep growing; however, while experience also accumulates, Paragon leveling curve is extremely steep.

Reaching Paragon 200 requires only about 3% to 4% of the total experience needed to hit level 300.

The halfway point in terms of total experience is Paragon 279, and the experience required for the final 21 levels is roughly equal to the sum of all experience gained from levels 1 through 279.

Therefore, players should not expect their Eternal Realm characters to easily reach level 300 after just two or three seasons.

If your goal is to reach Paragon 300, it is faster to level up in Seasonal Realm; funneling the experience earned during a season into your Eternal Realm character is a more efficient approach.

Items That Carry Over into Season 16

The amount of content that carries over into D4 Season 16 is very limited. Materials, Runes, Mythic gear, and season-specific abilities - such as Flames of Metus, Ice of Excidium, and Ghosts of Odium - will not be transferred to your seasonal characters.

Naturally, any Splinters will also become obsolete once Season 15 ends, unless the development team announces that certain season-specific content will be retained for Season 16.

That said, the development team has indicated that some content from Season of Hell's Legacy will carry over to Season 16, though the full list remains unknown.

Currently, in 3.3.0 PTR, items and locations such as Hellfire Torch, Annihilus, and Lester's Farm are still present, while other elements have been removed.

Beyond these, the final extent of content from Season 15 that will be preserved for Season 16 will be confirmed in an official announcement.

As a general rule, season-specific items and abilities are highly unlikely to persist across seasons.

Why is Season 16 worth starting from scratch?

Diablo 4 Season 16 offers players compelling reasons to start fresh - from the introduction of War Plans and new Horadric Items to comprehensive class reworks.

While everyone returns to the same starting line, the balance adjustments and new meta builds in Season 16 will shift the existing landscape, providing plenty of fresh content to explore.

Take War Plans, for instance: Season 16 features Tyrael's Boons - a seasonal-exclusive War Plans tree that puts rewards and gameplay mechanics directly in your hands.

You can even unlock new Horadric Cube recipes, such as Greater Temper, through this system.

Furthermore, the new, season-exclusive Horadric Items will keep things exciting as you farm, integrating with your Talisman system to unlock even more possibilities for your character builds.

On top of that, several classes have received significant adjustments to their damage output and skills.

With so many new options to consider, choosing a build for your fresh start becomes an engaging part of the experience - giving you a real incentive to begin anew.

These changes in Diablo 4 Season 16 ensure that a seasonal reset isn't just a return to square one; it's a fantastic opportunity for a fresh start and a chance to dive into brand-new systems.

Leave the progress of your old characters in Eternal Realm - it's time to embark on a brand-new journey in Season 16!
