Can the 7-Day Trade Ban Save MSCW? Players Shouldn't Pay for Botting and Inflation

PublishedPublished: Nov 06, 2026

MapleStory Classic World quickly attracted a large number of nostalgic players after its grand launch, but the initial hype didn't automatically eliminate the game's economic and operational problems.

With escalating botting, persistent mesos inflation, and the official extension of the new character trading restriction to 7 days, players are beginning to re-evaluate the development direction of this classic MMORPG.

Meanwhile, the rapid turnover of cash shop cosmetic chests and external competition from new games are also putting new pressure on the development team. Will these changes help the game stabilize, or will they further impact new player retention?

Trade Ban Extended to 7 Days

MapleStory Classic World Under Pressure: Can It Fix Botting, Inflation, and Player Retention?

Initially, the official trading restrictions for new accounts were relatively lenient: after a character reached Lv. 15, trading was unlocked after 24 hours. This window of opportunity was sufficient for normal players to smoothly transition through the vulnerable newbie phase by exchanging equipment and potions with other players.

However, as bots began massively farming mesos in low-level maps, the official rules were quickly tightened, extending the trade waiting period from 24 hours to 168 hours (7 days). NX trading restrictions were also adjusted simultaneously - after an account acquires NX for the first time, the trading waiting time for Cash Shop items was extended from 48 hours to 96 hours (4 days).

This means that even if players immediately recharge after reaching level 15, they cannot quickly acquire mesos by selling NX items to accelerate their growth.

These adjustments were clearly intended to slow down the rate at which bots convert their output into profit, giving the official team time to detect and ban them, but new players were also affected.

Whether it's exchanging transitional equipment with friends or receiving potions from other players, these were all part of the early social experience of MapleStory Classic World.

The 7-day trading restriction means new characters must rely more on grinding, looting, and completing quests to accumulate resources during the first week. For players accustomed to the convenience of modern games, this undoubtedly raises the barrier to early progression.

Trading Restrictions Fails to Curb Mesos Inflation

Behind the tightened trading restrictions lies weeks of mesos inflation. For example, Gloves Attack Scroll, initially priced at around 700k-800k MSCW mesos at grand launch, surged to approximately 2.2 million within just five days, nearly tripling its original price.

Multiple factors contribute to this inflation. On one hand, bots continuously farm mesos and scrolls in low-level maps, increasing market supply; on the other hand, more and more players are reaching Lv. 40 and even Lv. 50-60, increasing gold income from higher-level monsters.

However, daily consumables like potions haven't increased in price accordingly, and the lack of sufficient mesos recycling channels within the game leads to a continuous accumulation of gold, driving up the prices of equipment and scrolls.

However, extending trading limits doesn't directly solve the problem of excessive gold production. If bots aren't effectively eliminated, this measure might merely delay market sell-offs while impacting the trading experience for regular players.

For MSCW, which emphasizes a classic, slow-paced experience, the official team still needs to control bot and mesos production at the source, rather than simply extending trading wait times for all new players.

Cash Shop Turnover Speed Raises Concerns

The update cycle of Cash Shop has also drawn attention. Halloween Mystery Fashion Crate was available for a limited time of 8 days during Halloween, priced at 4,900 NX per crate, before being replaced by the regular Mystery Fashion Crate priced at 3,500 NX.

The new crate pool included Teddy Bear Suit, Pillow Weapon, and a range of beanies and pajama sets - these are indeed recognizable cosmetic items in MapleStory history, but the rapid turnover has led many players to interpret it as a FOMO-driven monetization strategy.

Objectively speaking, cosmetic Cash Shop items don't directly disrupt game balance, but they shape players' perception of the operators' intentions. At a time of severe mesos inflation and an artificially high barrier to entry for new players, frequent box rotations can easily be interpreted as prioritizing short-term revenue over addressing systemic issues.

This perception is amplified when Halloween Crates are significantly more expensive than regular boxes but have extremely short durations.

The Diversionary Pressure from WoW Forever

Even setting aside internal economic issues, MapleStory Classic World is facing new external competitive pressure - WoW Forever launched on November 4th, including new content with a level cap of 60, expanded areas, and support for Hardcore rules.

While the two games have different core gameplay - MapleStory focuses on 2D side-scrolling combat and character progression, while Forever offers a 3D open-world MMO experience - they both target players who enjoy classic MMORPGs. Therefore, the two games will continue to compete for players' limited time and attention. While the new player period of MSCW was shrouded in trade locks and inflation, another classic spin-off with a massive IP appeal opened its doors, and the direction of the exodus wasn't hard to predict.

The Next Step for MS Classic World

MapleStory Classic World is at a critical stage of development. While the game has attracted many nostalgic players, issues such as botting, RMT, and mesos inflation continue to impact the experience of regular players.

Extending the trade lockout to 7 days increases the cost for bot accounts to transfer resources, but this cannot replace effective bot detection and banning measures. If the official team simply tightens the trade rules, it may ultimately impose more restrictions on ordinary players.

Next, Nexon needs to find a balance between combating bots, stabilizing the economy, and improving the new player experience. Classic nostalgia can attract players back, but the game's long-term vitality ultimately depends on whether the operators can solve these practical problems.
