While Path of Exile 3.28 won't start until early March, there's still plenty to do in the current leagues. The official announcement just came in: PoE 3.27 will bring back Legacy of Phrecia event on January 29th (PST).
This mode was originally released in February 2025, but due to popular player feedback, it was extended to April. Even so, some players may still not have experienced this mode, so let's take a look at the unique mechanics and content of Legacy of Phrecia.

Dates And Rules
Legacy of Phrecia event is short, lasting only about 20 days, with the following dates:
- Start Date: 1 PM January 29th PST / Jan 29, 2026 4:00 PM (EST)
- End Date: 1 PM February 19th PST / Feb 19, 2026 4:00 PM (EST)
League Mode
Legacy of Phrecia is a standalone league, meaning you'll need to create a new orange to participate. The current announcement indicates the availability of Standard and Hardcore Solo Self-found league,. This likely means players can only choose between unlimited mode and simultaneously enabling both Hardcore and Solo rules, rather than choosing Softcore SSF alone. If this is the case, it's expected to be adjusted based on community feedback.
After the event ends, Legacy of Phrecia characters will be merged into the mainstream Keepers of the Flame league, and the merged characters will fully Ascendancy passive points, as the Ascendancies introduced in the event do not exist in the base game.
Rewards
Players will receive a Mystery Box as a reward, as your character reaches levels 50 and 90, which can only be claimed once per account. However, please note that these are usually past chests, and their value should not be the primary motivation for participating. They will be a nice bonus if the event itself appeals to you.
Legacy of Phrecia event will be available simultaneously on PC and consoles for the first time, and you can change your Ascendancies during the event. Regarding Forbidden Flame and Forbidden Flesh jewels, they still exist, but they will only provide Ascendancy passive points for the base game and will not contribute to the new Ascendancies introduced in the event, primarily for balance reasons.
What Is Legacy of Phrecia?
New Ascendancies
The event will introduce 19 completely different Ascendancies. These are not existing classes in the game, but rather reimagined versions based on discarded designs. These Ascendancies will become part of the main league's Ascendancies after the event, with the following correspondence:
Marauder:
- Antiquarian (Chieftain)
- Behemoth (Berserker)
- Ancestral Commander (Juggernaut)
Duelist:
- Gambler (Gladiator)
- Paladin (Champion)
- Aristocrat (Slayer)
Shadow:
- Servant of Arakaali (Assassin)
- Surfcaster (Saboteur)
- Blind Prophet (Trickster)
Ranger:
- Daughter of Oshabi (Pathfinder)
- Whisperer (Deadeye)
- Wildspeaker (Warden)
Witch:
- Harbinger (Occultist)
- Herald (Elementalist)
- Bog Shaman (Necromancer)
Templar:
- Architect of Chaos (Inquisitor)
- Polytheist (Guardian)
- Puppeteer (Hierophant)
Scion:
- Scavenger (Ascendant)
In the previous Legacy of Phrecia event, Ascendancies like Ancestral Commander were far stronger than others, severely impacting build diversity. Therefore, Official will be making comprehensive balance adjustments this time to ensure no single Ascendancy class can dominate, encouraging more diverse build exploration.
As a result, some potentially powerful but overshadowed classes, such as Gambler Ascendancy, will have the opportunity to shine.
Atlas System Changes
This event will completely remove the familiar Atlas system, replacing it with a new mechanic called Idols. You can think of Idols as jewels used to enhance Atlas nodes.
Idols cannot be crafted using regular PoE currency. They have a 50% chance to drop from Map Bosses and will also be added to the core loot pool, with a moderate drop rate. After obtaining idols, you can consume a large amount of gold to recombine them, hoping to create perfect attributes.
Idols system replaces many talent effects on Atlas. In short, if you're willing to highly specialize in a particular mechanic, Idols can elevate the Juice of the map to levels far exceeding those of regular gameplay. However, note that Breach Idols affix, which stacked and caused rampant Rogue Exile in the last event, has been completely removed. Therefore, the economy in this event won't experience the extreme inflation seen last time, but it's still expected to be quite active.
Game Adjustments
Global Map Affixes
Each area in the event will have a random number of map affixes, which will increase with the area's level. This is equivalent to a globally applied Cartography Scarab of Risk effect. However, some extremely poor affixes have been removed, but challenging affixes such as "109% of physical damage converted to additional fire damage" or "monsters penetrate elemental resistance" may still appear. These affixes are expected to provide bonuses to quantity, rarity, and pack size, similar to regular map affixes.
Boss Enhancements
Some campaign bosses, and Pinnacle Bosses in Legacy of Phrecia will receive new mechanics to increase their challenge. These mechanics may be similar to or weaker versions of those in Gauntlet event. Additionally, all unique monsters will enter a berserk state when low on health. These changes mean that players choosing Hardcore will face significantly increased challenges.
That's a general overview of Legacy of Phrecia. It's worth noting that the asynchronous trade system will be available during this event. It makes collecting an ideal set of idols easier than ever before, but item values will fluctuate wildly, so be prepared.
