Following the conclusion of BlizzCon 2026, the long-awaited Diablo 4 Season 15 has finally been unveiled. Officially titled Season of Hell's Legacy, it launches on September 15 at 10:00 AM PDT.
Coinciding with the 30th anniversary of Diablo franchise, Season 15 centers on themes of nostalgia and reinvention. Deckard Cain returns to guide players against the three Prime Evils, while Waking Nightmare feature recreates classic series locations using the modern game engine. The season also introduces Soul Splinters, Legacy Uniques, and a significantly overhauled class balance system. Below, we break down the season's core mechanics and key changes based on the full patch notes.
Seasonal Storyline: The Return of the Three Prime Evils

The Season 15 questline begins with the return of Deckard Cain's spirit. Cain warns that three Dark Wanderers are being tormented by the power of Prime Evils; players must enter their nightmares to defeat Diablo, Baal, and Mephisto.
Upon defeating a Prime Evil, players obtain the corresponding Splinter of Evil, though only one can be carried at a time. Carrying a specific Prime Evil's Splinter triggers periodic bursts of that entity's Iconic Power during combat: Fire damage for Diablo, Frost damage for Baal, and Physical damage for Mephisto. However, carrying a Splinter also increases the damage taken from the corresponding Prime Evil.
Splinters of Evil provide buffs to specific activities:
- Diablo Splinter: Enhances Helltides and Infernal Hordes
- Baal Splinter: Enhances Undercity and Lair Bosses
- Mephisto Splinter: Enhances The Pit and Nightmare Dungeons
Waking Nightmare: A Nostalgic Journey Through 30 Years of Diablo

Waking Nightmare is the season's core activity, reimagining iconic moments from Diablo franchise's history using Diablo 4's engine and art style. They fall into three overall categories:
Prime Evil Waking Nightmare
Part of the seasonal questline, this takes the form of a multi-level Capstone Dungeon where players progress floor by floor until facing Diablo, Baal, or Mephisto. Once the seasonal questline is completed, these dungeons can be replayed at Torment 10 difficulty or higher for richer loot rewards.
Standard Waking Nightmare
Scattered across the open world, these 10 distinct dungeons feature fixed entrances and recreate classic locations such as Tal Rasha's Tomb, Den of Evil, and Halls of the Blind.
Pop-up Waking Nightmare
The third and smallest type of Waking Nightmare appears randomly in the open world; upon entering, players face either classic bosses from the past or bizarre, unique monsters.
Soul Splinters: High Risk, High Reward
Soul Splinters are a system distinct from Splinters of Evil. They are special D4 items that can be socketed into jewelry and Leoric's Crown, with a maximum of three splinters per item.
Derived from demonic power, each Soul Splinter grants potent buffs but comes with a corresponding downside. Diablo 4 Season 15 introduces eight Soul Splinters:
- Splinter of Anguish
- Splinter of Sin
- Splinter of Lies
- Splinter of the Black Soulstone
- Splinter of Pain
- Splinter of the Mother
- Splinter of Hellfire
- Splinter of Damnation
They drop in four rarities - Magic, Rare, Legendary, and Unique - and players can use Amalgamation feature in Horadric Cube to combine splinters of the same type and rarity into higher-quality versions.
System-Level Optimizations: War Plan Sharing and Mythic Unique Crafting Overhaul

Cross-character War Plan sharing is one of the most practical changes in Season 15. Previously, each character had to progress their War Plan individually; now, all characters within the same game mode share progress. However, progress is not shared between Hardcore and Softcore characters, nor between Eternal and Seasonal realms, and Solo Self-Found characters maintain their own independent progress.
Mythic Unique crafting has undergone a fundamental transformation in Season 15. First, the plan from PTR to downgrade Iconic Mythics to standard Uniques has been scrapped; Iconic Mythics retain their quality tier and status as top-tier chase items.
Most importantly, Horadric Cube now features a new recipe: Upgrade Direct Item to Mythic. This recipe offers a 1:1 conversion, preserving all original Unique affixes, Tempering, and Masterworking progress.
Additionally, the Crafted tag - removed midway through Season 14 - is making a comeback; Mythic Uniques created via this recipe will bear this tag, and characters remain limited to equipping only one item with Crafted tag.
Furthermore, Blacksmith has added two new chest recipes: one yields a random generic Mythic Unique, while the other specifically produces an Iconic Mythic; both cost the same amount of Resplendent Sparks.
Season 15 also introduces two affix-rerolling recipes to Horadric Cube, allowing players to fine-tune their gear with greater precision:
- Affix Value Reroll: Rerolls the base affixes of gear and Talismans while preserving Greater Affixes, Enchanted Affixes, Tempering, and Transfiguration.
- Horadric Reroll: Exclusively for Charms and Seals of Legendary quality or higher; it completely rerolls base affixes but does not alter set bonuses or the unique powers of Mythic charms.

Class Balance
Barbarian: Significant Core Stat Nerf
Barbarian's core stat scalar has been reduced from 1.1 to 0.8, meaning the damage bonus per 10 points of Strength has dropped from 1.1% to 0.8%. Madawc's damage in Call of the Ancients has been cut from 240% to 120%, and the damage for Rallying Cry variant of Madawc has been reduced from 200% to 100%.
The bleeding bonus from Two-Handed Sword Expertise has also been halved from 30% to 15%, and several Paragon Glyphs and Legendary nodes have seen reductions. Despite these changes, Whirlwind Barbarian remains an S-tier choice thanks to its inherent mechanical advantages.
Druid: Core Stat Buff and Key Bug Fixes
Druid's core stat scalar has been increased from 1.25 to 1.625, providing a damage boost across all builds. The damage bonus for Fleshrender has been significantly increased from the 40%-50% range to 100%-135% and now applies to all Tornadoes. The 5-piece bonus for Storm Shepherd set grants a 100% damage boost, while the damage from double and triple casts has been reduced to curb extreme burst potential.
Necromancer: A Resurgence for Corpse Explosion and Army of the Dead
Necromancer's core stat scalar has been raised from 1.25 to 1.625. Army of the Dead can now be cast cumulatively up to 5 times, creating scenarios where multiple waves of skeletons strike the boss simultaneously. Corpse Explosion receives a 70% increase in base damage, with the Miasma DoT version boosted by 140% and Shrapnel version by 180%.
Soulrift now increases Shadow damage, with the bonus scaling by rank; this change promises to enable viable Shadow DoT builds. Rathma's Waking Touch set has been reworked: the cooldown reduction per minion hit has dropped from 1 second to 0.25 seconds, and the damage bonus has decreased from 450% to 200%, though the overall power remains substantial given the new stacking capability of Army of the Dead.
Paladin and Rogue
Paladin receives a core stat scalar increase (from 1.25 to 1.625). Blessed Shield's Thorns damage now scales with skill rank, and Shield of Retribution benefits similarly. Holy Bolt, Blessed Shield, and Spear of Heavens have all received minor buffs. Despite these changes, Paladin remains in a relatively weak position at the start of the season.
Rogue performed exceptionally well in Diablo 4 Season 14, and Season 15 sees almost no nerfs targeting mainstream builds. Core builds such as Reign of Arrows, Barrage, and Penetrating Shot retain their strength, while only weaker skills have received buffs.
Sorcerer: Comprehensive Buffs for Meteor
Sorcerer's core stat scalar has been raised to 1.625. Meteor receives comprehensive buffs, with various damage values increasing: 180% to 240%, 306% to 408%, 45% to 88%, and 270% to 360%. Deep Freeze now generates Ice Spikes, and the damage of Ice Shards has also been increased.
Spiritborn: Removal of the 600% Damage Bonus from Tzic Rune
In Season 14, Spiritborn relied on a bug involving Tzic Rune to gain approximately 600% bonus damage; this bug was fixed in Season 15. To compensate for this loss, the developers significantly buffed Spiritborn's Paragon Board, core skills, Potency skills, and unique weapons.
Rock Splitter's Thorns damage percentage now scales with skill rank, while Rake, Stinger, Quill Volley, and Crushing Heads have all received damage increases. Values for multiple Paragon Board nodes have been substantially raised, though players will likely still notice a significant drop in overall damage output.
Warlock: A Well-Deserved S+ Tier Class
Warlock received massive buffs in Season 15, establishing itself as a dominant S-tier class. Blazing Streams and Brimstone Hunger were improved, Bombardment became more powerful, and Dread Claws saw enhancements.
Sin Demon variant of Metamorphosis now boosts Maximum Wrath and Dominance by 50%; additionally, each active Demon Summon grants a 5% damage bonus that scales with rank. When paired with Splinter of the Black Soulstone, Warlock demon kills count toward the Splinter's stacks, further amplifying damage - though the studio has implemented a cap on these stacks to prevent the power level from spiraling out of control.
Overall, Diablo 4 Season 15 brings not only a wealth of nostalgic content celebrating the franchise's 30th anniversary but also comprehensive adjustments to seasonal mechanics, crafting, and class balance. As the season goes live, we look forward to seeing which classes and builds emerge as the ultimate winners in Season of Hell's Legacy.
