Diablo 4 Dev Talk Reveals Lord of Hatred Overhaul | Players Didn't Expect Changes This Big

Category: Diablo 4 Posted: Feb 24, 2026 Views: 889

Diablo 4 is about to undergo a massive overhaul, essentially rewriting the entire game, from skills and items to the endgame - many aspects will be drastically different.

While we've already learned about these changes in the official trailers, a recent developer Q&A session provided a more detailed explanation. Let's take a look at the specific changes in Diablo 4 based on the conversation.

Diablo 4 Dev Talk Reveals Lord of Hatred Overhaul | Players Didn't Expect Changes This Big

Skill Tree System Rework

Removal of Passive Skills

In the official skill tree images, some observant players noticed that some nodes were missing. That's right, passive skills have been completely removed from the skill tree. The current skill tree will focus on skill customization.

The development team stated that they want the core of the skill tree to allow players to customize their skills, rather than providing free attribute bonuses. The passive points in the skill tree provided excessively high attributes, creating huge power disparities between different builds and classes. They plan to move this attribute growth to other systems.

Because most passive skills aren't inherently interesting - they're usually just simple damage reduction or increase - removing them will improve the leveling experience. Your build's core will come directly from your skills, no longer relying on numerous Legendary Aspects.

Skill Level Upgrades

In all the versions shown so far, you can use skill points to upgrade a skill 12 times, gaining 12 skill levels. If you have equipment or other effects that provide a +skill level, the skill level will continue to increase on top of that, gaining even higher numerical bonuses.

One point of interest is whether investing more skill points will grant additional effects. In the current version, only ultimate skills gain an additional effect after investing all 5 points, intended to encourage players to invest more points in ultimate skills.

However, in Lord of Hatred DLC, ultimate skills will have upgrade options like other skills, but the official announcement hasn't revealed whether additional points will grant additional effects.

Equipment System Overhaul

Unique Items

The skill system rework has integrated the effects of some unique items into the new skill tree. Therefore, the effects of some older unique items will be adjusted, but they will remain core to build.

This means that many existing unique items will be completely reworked, possessing drastically different effects. In a sense, this is equivalent to introducing many new unique items in the DLC.

Since skill enhancements can already change gameplay and skill elements, unique items further deepen this, bringing more possible variations and gameplay to a skill. It can be said that almost every build in the game, even using the exact same core skills, will have a completely different gameplay experience.

Legendary Items

Because many gameplay-changing power effects may be moved to the skill tree, most of Legendary items will also be reworked. The official statement indicates that Legendary items will still have aspects, but specific changes to Legendary items are not yet finalized and may be revealed before the expansion's release.

Quality of Life

Item Display with Loot Filter

In the official demo, filtered grayed-out items were still visible after enabling the loot filter. This is because the demo version was from early development. In the official release, filtered items will be completely hidden and uninterrupted, consistent with similar features in other games.

Automatic Disenchanting

Some players wanted the loot filter to automatically disenchant filtered Diablo 4 items, but the developers' intention is to reduce the need for frequent disenchanting. This does not mean the loot filter will have an automatic disenchanting function.

If the loot filter could automatically disenchant items, players would filter out everything, only seeing the desired high-quality items for maximum efficiency, which is not good game design.

Furthermore, with the addition of more recipes to Horadric Cube, the developers want players to pick up and keep more different types of items, which contradicts the automatic disenchanting feature.

Endgame Gameplay

Solo Self Found

The core of Solo Self Found is the prohibition of trading and team play, allowing for completely solo play. The development team has promised to continue developing Solo Self Found, but it will not be released simultaneously with DLC 2.

Solo Self is linked to leaderboards and Tower system, which are currently in testing. Therefore, Solo Self mode will have to wait. It is expected that Solo Self mode will be released once these systems are finalized.

Past Season Mechanics

The official announcement confirms that some mechanics from past seasons will be integrated into the base game in various forms. These mechanics will not be 100% copied exactly, but will feel very familiar to players. For example, Sanctification from Season 11 may be added to Horadric Cube as a recipe.

Additionally, in the DLC 2 trailer, Chaos Rifts from Season of Infernal Chaos will also return, appearing in Helltides. Features from other seasons will also be integrated into the core game in various ways.

Cosmetic Rewards

The development team hopes to add more cosmetic rewards, primarily cosmetic items such as special mounts, cosmetic equipment, and titles, specifically targeting players who invest heavily in endgame content. They also specifically mentioned adding more exclusive, showy rewards for Expert Mode.

War Plans

War Plans is an endgame system somewhat similar to PoE Atlas tree, but the developers state it won't be overly complex, and its functions will be easily understood by both new and veteran players.

Players can also skip War Plans endgame skill tree after reaching the level cap and directly experience endgame content. However, as players gain a deeper understanding of these systems, they can use them to choose more content, adjust loot drops, change difficulty, and more.

Undoubtedly, Lord of Hatred will bring a transformative update to Diablo 4, significantly altering the game's difficulty and character progression experience. We look forward to more exciting content from the development team.
