  Act 4

  Strengths and Weaknesses

  Smite Paladin build is not an all-rounder. It is inefficient at clearing areas and mobs, but its single-target damage is second to none. That is why it is mainly used for hunting bosses. If you intend to farm the game's toughest bosses and acquire Hellfire Torch Large Charm and Annihilus, then with a Smite Paladin you will need almost no investment.

  The advantage of Paladin's Smite skill lies in its fixed 95% chance to hit, as well as its ability to trigger Crushing Blow and Open Wounds from your equipment, which rapidly shaves down a boss's health.

  Cannot Be Frozen effect from Raven Frost is very important. If you go with that option, replace your shield with a four-socket Paladin-only shield and fill it with four Perfect Diamonds for all resistances.

  Regular Monster Drops

  Sunder Charms can now drop like ordinary Diablo 2 Resurrected items from any monster capable of dropping a Grand Charm, with a rarity roughly comparable to that of Gheed's Fortune. Whenever a Grand Charm would drop, there is a chance it upgrades into a unique Sunder Charm.

  Under this drop path, both difficulty level and Magic Find directly affect the odds. That means if you are farming Andariel or Mephisto on Hell difficulty with high player counts and high Magic Find, those settings remain fully effective – and you might even stumble upon a Sunder Charm unexpectedly.

  Herald Drops

  Heralds drop Sunder Charms through two mechanisms. In the first, Sunder Charm belongs to a special Treasure Class independent of normal drops, similar to how runes work in Diablo 2 Resurrected. Only Herald monsters have access to this Treasure Class.

  Player count has no influence on drop rates from this mechanism. Magic Find has such a tiny effect that it can be ignored. Therefore, when farming Heralds, you should prioritize survivability and skill levels over Magic Find.

  The second mechanism is Heralds dropping Sunder Charms as if they were ordinary monsters – a drop that is affected by player count and Magic Find. However, because the developer reduced Heralds' unique coefficient from 989 to 800, their regular drops are almost always magic items. As a result, Sunder Charms almost never come from this ordinary path; they come almost exclusively from the special Treasure Class.

  Within Herald drop table, the probabilities for different elemental Sunder Charms are not equal. For example, you are far less likely to find Black Cleft than Bone Break. By contrast, on the regular monster drop table, all six Sunder Charms have exactly the same odds. Their official names are:

  • Flame Rift: reduces fire immunity
  • Cold Rupture: reduces cold immunity
  • Crack of the Heavens: reduces lightning immunity
  • Rotting Fissure: reduces poison immunity
  • Black Cleft: reduces magic immunity

  Herald Spawn Mechanics

  This is the core change of the patch. The game now uses a completely new formula to decide when Heralds spawn, and that formula depends entirely on your Zone Completion Percentage.

  In simple terms, this percentage tracks how many monsters you have killed within the current area. You need to clear out demons – not just teleport past them to kill elites.

  Diablo 2 Resurrected monitors your kill progress inside a Herald Spawning Zone. The more monsters you clear, the higher your zone completion percentage becomes, and the higher the chance that killing the next monster will spawn a Herald. This chance does not increase linearly. Typically, when your zone completion is below 50%, the spawn rate stays low. Once you pass 50%, the rate rises sharply.

  This is not a cumulative probability. That is, killing a certain number of monsters does not guarantee a Herald spawn. Instead, every kill gives you a chance, like rolling a many-sided die each time. Only when the die lands on the right face does a Herald appear.

  Issues with the New Mechanism

  Although the new system increases the total number of Heralds, it also brings some unintended consequences.

  Gheed's Fortune Rarity

  The developer set the drop rate for Sunder Charms to match that of Gheed's Fortune. But the game now has seven unique Grand Charms in total. Whenever the game decides to drop a unique Grand Charm, it randomly picks from these seven. As a result, Gheed's Fortune has become exactly as rare as any specific Sunder Charm – meaning it is now roughly seven times rarer than before.

  Nightmare Difficulty

  Sunder Charms require monsters to be at least level 69. In Nightmare difficulty, Terror Zones can push monster levels above 70, which makes Nightmare a potential farming ground.

  Because monsters in Nightmare have almost no immunities, players can kill them far more efficiently than on Hell difficulty. This may encourage high-level characters to go back to a lower difficulty, farming Sunder Charms at tremendous speed to gain the immunity-breaking ability they need to beat Hell – a reversal of the intended logical progression.

  Cow Level Problem

  Because Heralds spawn only after accumulating zone completion percentage, areas like the Cow Level – which have a relatively fixed number of monsters and can be Terrorized – suffer from a flaw.

  You need to kill roughly 70% of the monsters to have a decent chance of spawning a Tier 1 Herald. By then, fewer than 30% of the monsters remain in the zone, far short of the completion needed to spawn higher-tier Heralds. Consequently, in a single session, you can almost never keep refreshing Cow Level to obtain high-tier Heralds.

  While Heralds and Sunder Charms bring some problems, Season 14 is nevertheless a major improvement over Season 13 of Diablo 2 Resurrected. The developer still has room to refine these mechanics further.

  Additionally, within Terror Zones mode, provided the zone's TC level reaches 75 or higher, the probability of Naj's Puzzler dropping increases significantly.

  Even if you aren't particularly interested in this specific item or its associated set, or if your character belongs to a non-caster class, we still recommend keeping it if you happen to find one. It remains a valuable asset, if only for the purpose of trading with other players.

  Trang-Oul's Claws

  As part of Trang-Oul's Avatar item set, these gloves are practical for almost all casters and are particularly well-suited for characters without a distinct elemental specialization.

  However, because they also provide a 20% faster cast rate bonus, Trang-Oul's Claws are frequently compared to Magefist.

  While the latter is indeed better suited for specific builds, in terms of general versatility, Trang-Oul's Claws hold the edge thanks to their accompanying bonus to Cold Resistance.

  Generally speaking, Diablo 2 Resurrected class best suited to utilize Trang-Oul's Claws is Necromancer.

  In terms of farming difficulty, Trang-Oul's Claws are slightly easier to acquire than Naj's Puzzler, offering a decent drop rate for treasure hunting as early as Nightmare difficulty.

  You may be more accustomed to referring to this gear simply as Aldur's Boots; they are a component of Aldur's Watchtower set.

  In addition to providing a substantial bonus of up to +50 to Life, these boots feature the all-important 40% Faster Run/Walk bonus. Furthermore, they convert 10% of damage taken into Mana.

  Another noteworthy attribute is the variable range of the fire resistance bonus provided by these boots, which can reach a maximum of 50%, whereas the fire resistance cap on most rare boots typically reaches only 40%.

  Consequently, if you are playing a build that specializes in fire-based skills, these boots are an indisputably top-tier piece of gear.

  However, when evaluated solely on individual merit, there are indeed other options in D2R capable of replacing Aldur's Advance. Yet, within the category of Set boots, they remain the absolute first choice.

  Guillaume's Face

  Due to its somewhat tongue-twisting name, this piece of gear is commonly referred to by its abbreviation: G Face. Its most compelling feature lies in its impressive bonuses: a staggering 30% Faster Hit Recovery, 35% Crushing Blow, and 15% Deadly Strike.

  While its defensive attributes are solid overall, the true value of this piece of gear lies in its formidable offensive capabilities: Crushing Blow directly reduces an enemy's health by a certain percentage, while Deadly Strike provides a chance to deal double damage.

  Compared to the gear pieces mentioned previously, Guillaume's Face offers an additional advantage: it can be socketed.

  Given this, if you intend to insert a gem or rune into it, we highly recommend starting with an Ohm Rune, as it provides the crucial Cannot be Frozen attribute that this helm otherwise lacks.

  To acquire this helm, set the player count to 1 on Nightmare difficulty, stack approximately 200% Magic Find, and then farm Diablo or Baal; you should be able to obtain it relatively quickly. If you are capable of handling Hell difficulty, the drop rate will naturally be even higher.

  Core Skills

  • Abyss: Max this out first, as you'll be using it almost 80% of the time. You can cast it from the furthest point in your line of sight, dealing damage before aggroing monsters. Abyss will pull in monsters and continuously deal damage; normal monsters can usually be killed in 1-2 pulses.
  • Miasma Chain: Max this out. As a synergy skill with Abyss, it increases Abyss damage. Miasma Chain is primarily used against bosses or high-health elites, accounting for approximately 20% of usage.
  • Miasma Bolt: Max this out as well. Also, a synergy skill with Abyss. However, because of the limited number of hotkeys, many players do not frequently use it as their primary skill. Some find Miasma Chain cumbersome and switch to Miasma Bolt. Choose according to personal preference.

  Support Skills

  Early on, if skill bonuses are lacking, consider leveling Enhance Entropy to 20 to increase Abyss absorption range. Later in the game, if equipment provides a large number of skill levels, you might not even need to invest points.

  Boots

  What exactly are curse effects?

  In D2R, for Warlock class, a curse effect actually refers to a specific affix that can be applied to enemies, allowing the caster to trigger Amplify Damage. It is worth noting that Necromancer possesses a skill of the exact same name; be careful not to confuse the two.

  More specifically, this Curse effect reduces a monster's PDR by 100%. Even when facing monsters that are otherwise immune to physical damage, this effect will still reduce their physical resistance by 20%.

  Changes to curse trigger mechanics

  When you, as a Warlock, summon a demonic minion, it will automatically attempt to trigger and apply the curse effect to enemies while engaging them in combat.

  Previously, the chance for a demonic minion to trigger this Curse effect was a generous 75%; however, Patch 3.2.0 has slashed this probability down to a mere 5%.

  In other words, whereas a demon used to successfully apply a curse three out of every four attacks, it now has only a one-in-twenty chance of successfully triggering the curse effect with each attack it launches.

  Fortunately, however, there is an accompanying buff: once a demonic minion successfully triggers Amplify Damage via Curse effect, that effect will now apply as AoE.

  This functions as if your summoned demon had directly cast an AoE curse spell; consequently, you no longer need to apply the curse to individual monsters one by one.

  How to increase the curse trigger chance?

  Although Amplify Damage has been buffed, any demon remains effectively idle until the curse actually takes effect.

  Therefore, if you wish to play builds centered around this mechanic in Season 14 and the updated RotW expansion, the key lies in finding ways to independently boost the curse's trigger rate. In most cases, this depends on the specific type of demon you summon.

  Hell Witch

  This demon possesses an innate Amplify Damage ability; additionally, she utilizes basic magic arrow attacks and casts Blood Mana Curse. However, Blood Curse is ineffective against monsters, as they do not possess any mana to be drained.

  Conversely, this implies that in many situations, Hell Witch can single-handedly apply curses to entire packs of monsters without requiring any external assistance.

  Based on this, the curse coverage provided by Hell Witch is decent, though it becomes significantly more effective when paired with a Teleport-and-Stomp tactical approach. To execute this strategy, you must first equip Enigma Runeword.

  

  Pit Lord

  This type of demon is immune to almost all forms of damage, with the exception of physical and magic damage. Furthermore, by entering Stone Skin state, they can become completely immune to physical damage as well.

  They also possess a flame breath attack and move at a relatively high speed. Consequently, they can apply curses not only through their standard attacks but also via their flame breath, which has the potential to trigger the curse effect with every instance of damage dealt.

  However, in actual combat, Pit Lord's overall frequency of curse application is generally not particularly high, as they only choose to utilize their the flame breath attack sporadically.

  Fortunately, by exploiting Multishot affix found on Elite monsters, you can enable Pit Lord to unleash three streams of the flame breath simultaneously.

  Such an empowered Pit Lord can even serve as a direct meat shield for you, allowing it to tank hits from even the most powerful bosses.

  Further empowering Hell Witch

  Since Pit Lord is capable of acquiring both Curse and Multi-shot affixes, Hell Witch can naturally benefit from them as well.

  With the combined support of these two affixes, and given her innate ability to cast Amplify Damage curse, her consistent curse coverage is elevated to an even higher level.

  Provided you have Enigma Runeword equipped, as you continuously teleport across the map, the curse effects take immediate hold, resulting in an ever-increasing frequency of curse application.

  However, to ensure your Hell Witch demon gains all the aforementioned buffs, you must upgrade it to at least Unique Demon tier; to achieve this, you will need to invest a minimum of 15 points into Bind Demon skill.

  Furthermore, if you intend to utilize Consume Demon to acquire additional buffs, or wish to simultaneously summon other demons to fight alongside you, you will also need to sink a significant number of points into Demonic Mastery.

  When tallied up, these point investments will quickly consume a vast majority of your total available skill points, leaving you unable to allocate those precious points toward your character's own active combat skills or other utility-focused support abilities.

  Advanced options

  It is highly recommended that you seek out a demon possessing the curse, Multishot, and Holy Freeze Aura affixes simultaneously.

  Holy Freeze Aura requires no direct skill point investment to enhance; provided that the combined level of your relevant summoning skills reaches a total of 20, your summoned minions will automatically gain the aura enchanted property, granting them a chance to randomly spawn with this specific aura active.

  This particular combination proves exceptionally efficient for applying curses, as the damage triggered by Holy Freeze Aura itself is capable of activating the associated curse effects.

  If you are unable to secure a demon with this specific aura, it remains a viable strategy to utilize gear bearing Curse or Multishot affixes to provide supplementary damage support.
