Before officially swearing allegiance to a faction, you have ample time to accept quests from all three factions, interact with NPCs from each faction, and extract experience and learning points from each.

After defeating various creatures, you'll obtain raw meat, but never eat it raw. Instead, find a cooking spot near any campfire and cook the meat; this will significantly improve your recovery.
