WoW TBC Classic Anniversary Phase 3 Will Remove Attunements for All Legacy Raids: What Does This Mean for Your Alts?

The countdown to the launch of WoW TBC Classic Anniversary Phase 3 has begun. Have you prepared for the new raids, such as stockpiling enough gold or completing the necessary attunement quests?

If not, there is no need to worry. Just before the release of Phase 3, a major announcement was made: once Phase 3 goes live, the attunement requirements for all existing raids will be removed.

This is undoubtedly great news for TBC Classic Anniversary players who have fallen behind in progression but still want to jump quickly into the new Phase 3 raids.

But why did the game developers choose to introduce this change now? Will this mechanism continue when Phases 4 and 5 are released? We provide an analysis below.

WoW TBC Classic Anniversary Phase 3 Will Remove Attunements for All Legacy Raids: What Does This Mean for Your Alts?

What does the removal of attunement requirements for existing raids mean?

WoW TBC Classic Anniversary Phases 1 and 2 introduced a total of five raids. Karazhan (Phase 1), as well as Serpentshrine Cavern and Tempest Keep (Phase 2), all had their own specific attunement quests that had to be completed before entry was granted.

The new raids arriving in TBC Anniversary Phase 3, Battle for Mount Hyjal and Black Temple, also require attunement quests, which are closely linked to Phase 2 raids:

  • Battle for Mount Hyjal Attunement: Defeat the final bosses of the two Phase 2 raids.
  • Black Temple Attunement: Complete the attunement quests for all Phase 2 raids and Battle for Mount Hyjal.

If your progress was slow or you are new to the game and haven't completed Phase 2 attunement quests, the removal of these requirements in Phase 3 will significantly accelerate your progression!

To be more specific: you can proceed directly to Phase 2 raids (if you haven't finished them yet), defeat Lady Vashj and Kael'thas Sunstrider to complete Battle for Mount Hyjal attunement, and Black Temple attunement will be completed automatically as a result.

Why was this change introduced at this time?

Attunement quests, whether in the original servers or TBC Classic Anniversary, have long been a source of player complaints due to their tedious nature and high difficulty, with some players even quitting the game because of them.

The launch of Phase 3 marks only the midpoint of TBC Classic Anniversary cycle; if massive, irreversible player attrition occurs now, it will inevitably impact the game's trajectory for the remainder of the cycle.

Furthermore, you or your guildmates might need to slot specific classes or specializations into Phase 3 raid progression teams, necessitating the leveling of an alt.

Given the accelerated pace of Anniversary servers, failing to remove Attunement requirements from earlier phases means that players who have already quit won't return, while new players and those leveling alts will struggle with lagging progression or difficulty finding groups.

The rewards offered by Phase 3 raids are among the most attractive aspects of TBC Classic Anniversary cycle and serve as a primary driver for maintaining player engagement.

However, Attunement quests for Phase 3 itself are quite challenging. If the requirements from Phases 1 and 2 remain in place, the resulting difficulty in forming groups could lead to member turnover and recruitment crises for major guilds.

If a newly recruited member hasn't unlocked most of Phase 2 content, the guild must dedicate time to helping them catch up, significantly slowing down progress in Phase 3.

Ultimately, this not only ruins your gaming experience but also leads to a sharp drop in Phase 3 raid participation, which has far-reaching negative consequences for the server's overall activity levels.

Moreover, if you didn't stockpile enough consumables at the end of Phase 2 to handle the new Phase 3 content, removing Attunement requirements for Phases 1 and 2 allows you to shift your focus to farming WoW TBC Classic Anniversary gold needed to acquire more consumables.

Will this change persist in the future?

Phases 4 and 5 of TBC Anniversary are expected to launch this coming autumn and winter. Notably, Phase 4 will introduce Zul'Aman, a raid designed specifically as a catch-up raid to assist new players and alts.

Therefore, we predict that just before the launch of Phase 4, Attunement requirements for Phase 3 raids will likely be relaxed or completely removed. This will allow you to complete Zul'Aman raid sooner and secure the gear needed to prepare for the final phase.

As for Phase 5, Sunwell Plateau, set to arrive as the ultimate, most challenging raid of WoW TBC Classic Anniversary, will launch alongside other new content. It is highly probable that the trend of relaxing or removing legacy attunement requirements will continue.

After all, the primary purpose of attunement quests is to segment the player base during long phase cycles, ensuring everyone has ongoing goals to strive for and a reason to keep playing, rather than simply creating obstacles to your progress.

Given the increasingly rapid update cadence, scaling back or removing tedious mechanics, including attunement restrictions, is an inevitable trend for BCC Anniversary. Ultimately, the core appeal of any new raid lies in the raid itself, not the prerequisite quests.

Player feedback

The vast majority of players support these changes, viewing tedious attunement quests as a sheer waste of time.

However, there are dissenting voices arguing that such changes diminish the sense of immersion and the satisfaction of tiered progression inherent to BC Classic Anniversary.

Regardless, the removal of attunement requirements from previous phases is now a reality. That said, successfully conquering Battle for Mount Hyjal and Black Temple raids will still require significant effort, so don't let your guard down!
