WoW Midnight is still a month away from its official release and is currently in beta testing. The beta includes a lot of new content, and this evaluation focuses only on ranged DPS specializations.

The rankings here are not in any particular order, but purely based on gameplay and fun. Since the official version hasn't finalized all changes, their strength is currently uncertain.

Major Ranged DPS Changes in WoW Midnight Pre-Expansion | Shadow Priests Shine While Beast Mastery Hunters Struggle!

Affliction Warlock

Affliction Warlock is undoubtedly one of the winners of Midnight expansion, as Affliction Warlock playstyle from Legion has returned.

Malefic Rapture, a skill criticized by players for years, has finally been removed. It made Affliction Warlock lose its feel as a DoT build.

Vile Taint, previously used to apply Agony, has been removed due to its cooldown and timing issues. Agony is now manually applied and maintained. However, the new talent allows a single Agony to affect two targets, simplifying the gameplay.

The Affliction Warlock now primarily stacks a powerful DoT effect by casting Unstable Affliction, becoming its main source of single-target damage.

Seed of Corruption gameplay returns. When the corruption effect is active, three seeds can be cast consecutively and detonated.

The duration of Dark Glare has been significantly increased to approximately 25s. During its activation, if Malefic Grasp talent is selected, Shadow Bolt or Drain Soul will be replaced with Malefic Grasp.

Throughout the rotation, Shadow Bolt Volley will continuously trigger, firing AoE Shadow Bolts, which not only deal high damage but also look very cool.

Overall, the official changes primarily address player dissatisfaction and Warlock's weaknesses, making Affliction Warlock significantly stronger.

Shadow Priest

Shadow Priest was already one of the most fun and engaging specializations in the game, and the changes to Midnight make its skill rotation smoother and its cooldowns more perfectly balanced.

Shadow Priest's primary damage comes from Auspicious Spirits, which are now generated by Shadow Word: Madness.

The way its damage over time is applied has changed. The new skill, Tentacle Slam, is cast directly on the target, replacing the easily missed Shadow Crash.

When you cast Vampiric Touch, if you have Misery talent, you will also apply Shadow Word: Pain. This skill has 2 charges and a 15-second cooldown.

The Misery talent is very useful in AoE situations. A single target can choose another talent on the same node to increase Shadow Word: Pain damage by 150%, but this requires applying two separate damage over time effects.

Void Form is now retained as the primary cooldown skill, which aligns better with Shadow Priest specialization theme. Void Form button will now be replaced with the new Void Volley skill.

Elemental Shaman

Midnight update streamlined many classes, and Elemental Shaman is one of the biggest beneficiaries, as its gameplay has become much simpler.

Ice Fury and Frost Shock have been removed from Elemental Shaman specialization, simplifying it and removing unnecessary complexity and bloated skills. However, Deeply Rooted Elements talent, which could have provided surprising procs, has also been removed.

Echoes of the Great Sundering have also been removed. Elemental Shamans can now cast Earthquakes consecutively, and if Aftershock is triggered, it refunds Maelstrom, allowing for multiple consecutive casts with improved damage and visual effects.

Elemental Shaman's Lava Burst gameplay has changed. Voltaic Blaze replaces Flame Shock, now applying Flame Shock to up to six targets. A subsequent talent will cause your next Lava Burst to hit all targets affected by those Flame Shocks, dealing massive AoE damage.

Furthermore, Elemental Shamans no longer need to strictly differentiate between Storm/Lightning and Fire/Lava builds in the talent tree, and they can now utilize all elements more comprehensively.

Beast Mastery Hunter

Simplifying skills isn't always a good thing for other classes, and Beast Mastery Hunters are among the biggest victims. This specialization, while less reliant on gear and WoW gold in the early game, might be good for new players, but the oversimplification, with primary damage coming from pets, makes the hunter's physical presence feel dispensable.

Beast Mastery Hunters no longer use Barbed Shot to activate and maintain Frenzy stacks to increase pet attack speed, and this effect is now a fixed passive talent.

Furthermore, Barbed Shot no longer reduces the cooldown of Bestial Wrath. Bestial Wrath now has a 30-second base cooldown, allowing for timely casting.

The developers have also removed AoE effects of Multi-Shot and Kill Command, replacing them with Wild Thrash as the activation skill for Beast Cleave. Its cooldown is similar to Beast Cleave. Cleave duration is the same, and simply press it once the cooldown is over.

Devourer Demon Hunter

As a new specialization, Devourer Demon Hunter is fun to play initially, with excellent world effects and sound. However, its skill rotation is very monotonous and lacks depth, making it somewhat boring to play.

Many Devourer Demon Hunter talent points are allocated to simple damage or attribute increases, lacking interactivity and feeling like filler.

The core skill rotation of Devourer Demon Hunter only requires 4 keys, even Void Blade seems redundant. Furthermore, multiple casts are needed to initiate the rotation before entering combat, resulting in a poor experience. It needs to be used alternately with Reap (which becomes Eradicate after Void Ray).

Collapsing Star gained after entering Void Metamorphosis has a great casting feel, but it immediately consumes Soul Shards once casting begins, and canceling results in the loss of all Soul Shards.

These are the changes to ranged DPS. The official changes to the old classes are generally quite good (except for Beast Mastery Hunters). Even Devourer Demon Hunter is worth trying out, because the developers might make further modifications to its talents in the future.
