In RuneScape Dragonwilds, ranged combat style offers a safe distance for dealing damage, while also demanding precise positioning and careful equipment synergy.
To truly master ranged style, you need to understand what to focus on at each stage of your progression, which will help clarify your goals as you level up.
Skill Tree
In RS Dragonwilds, every level gained in ranged skill reduces the stamina cost of ranged attacks, allowing for smoother, more sustained combat.
An early, crucial milestone is Quick Action at level 3, which increases your attack speed. At level 8, you unlock Trick Shot, which rewards you with bonus damage if you time your release perfectly after fully drawing your bow.
At level 12, you gain Snare, which conjures Earth Magic at your feet to trap any enemies that enter the area. This skill works well in combination with others, making it well worth leveling your ranged skill to at least 12.
At level 15, you unlock Toxic Behaviour, allowing you to craft Weapon Poison. This can be applied to melee weapons or used to create Poisonous Arrows - a highly valuable asset for players who dabble in multiple combat styles.
Further along, keep an eye out for Crossbow Trick Shot at level 30; this is a key milestone for boosting your damage output when using a crossbow.
At level 35, you unlock Enchanted Crossbow Bolts, which imbue your crossbow bolts with elemental effects, further expanding your offensive options.
By level 45, you gain Fire Starter, which unlocks recipes for Fire Oil and Fire Arrows in RS Dragonwilds, enabling you to deal additional damage.
In the mid-to-late game, look forward to Greater Ammo Recovery at level 50 - which increases the chance of recovering your arrows - and the ultimate Range Cape at level 99, which gives your ranged attacks a chance to consume no stamina at all.
Of course, reaching level 99 in ranged is no small feat for most players.
Getting Started with Ranged
When you begin your journey in Bramblemead Valley, you can craft an Ash Shortbow at a crafting station. Alternatively, you can head into the caves, use Windstep to cross gaps and clear away thorny vines, and discover the recipe for an Adventurer's Longbow.
Both bows are sufficient for handling early-game progression in RuneScape Dragonwilds, as you will probably replace this gear shortly after leaving the starter zone.
At this stage, you will also need to craft Stone Arrows; gather the necessary materials for the recipe by defeating cows and goblins.
Goblin camps to the east, as well as the vaults located to the north and south, are excellent spots for farming. Once you have collected enough cowhide to craft a full set of Leather Armor, you can head toward Fractured Plains.
All ranged armor sets share the same passive bonuses, though their base armor and defense stats vary: wearing one piece grants +40 stealth speed, two pieces reduce stamina consumption while using ranged weapons, and three pieces provide a 25% damage bonus against enemy weaknesses.
While you can unlock Crystal Bow - which features a spread-shot ability - by completing Heartstrings quest in Fractured Plains, a more reliable choice for taking on the first boss is Hunter's Stagbow (dropped by Garou Hunters) or a standard Iron Crossbow.
Mid-Game Ranged Progression
Upon reaching Fellhollow in the mid-game, you can obtain Dorgeshuun Crossbow by completing Even More Restless Ghosts quest, or acquire Undead Ranger's Bow from a Dragonkin Effigy found within a vault.
Steel Arrows are arguably the best ammunition for this stage of the game, so be sure to collect iron and coal ore whenever you come across them.
The zombies in the western village move quite slowly; you can position yourself atop the runes and fire down at them. Better yet, utilize the piercing effect of Spectral Arrows to maximize your experience gain.
Once you reach Dowdun Reach, you will craft a Mithril Crossbow or a Maple Longbow - choose whichever suits your personal preference.
Snare ability mentioned earlier becomes highly useful here: when facing dense groups of enemies - such as Black Knights or Giant Rats - you can set a trap and kite the enemies into its immobilization range.
Before challenging the final boss, try to prepare a set of Blue Dragonhide Armour, or buy RS Dragonwilds items to assemble a suitable gear set.
Ranged Progression in the Late Game
As you reach the late-game stages of RuneScape Dragonwilds, you will gain access to higher-tier bows and crossbows within Umbral Sands region.
To start, complete Mapping the Sands II quest to obtain Bow of Elidinis. It features Lunar Rain ability - highly effective, given that KotHaar enemies in this area are weak to water damage.
For armor, you can choose between Red Dragonhide Armour and a Kalphite Carapace Chest, depending on your aesthetic preference and specific gameplay needs.
If you haven't yet upgraded to a Masterwork weapon, Rune-tier crossbows and magic bows available from Scorned Wilderness raid are excellent choices for this stage of the game.
As you progress further into the raid, you can also acquire a more powerful ranged armor set: Black Dragonhide.
Combat Tips
If you are playing on PC, you can use your mouse scroll wheel to quickly cycle through different arrow types.
This allows for seamless switching between special ammunition and standard arrows - a great way to conserve your high-quality arrows when facing weaker enemies.
Additionally, keep in mind that most enemies in RS Dragonwilds have a weak point on their head. Hitting this weak point grants a 0.5x damage-to-XP multiplier (compared to the standard 0.25x), so try to aim for these spots whenever you are fighting.
If you prefer using crossbows in the end-game, Dorgeshuun Crossbow offers higher overall damage; however, it cannot fire enchanted bolts. If you wish to utilize the effects of enchanted bolts, a Rune Crossbow is a better choice.
Developing your ranged combat style requires constant adjustments to your weapons, ammunition, and armor. Fortunately, in RuneScape Dragonwilds, organizing this information by region makes the process much more manageable!
