In WoW Forever, Hunter pet system returns to the design philosophy of the original Vanilla version while introducing additional rare creatures and brand-new abilities. Pets are no longer merely simple combat companions; they represent a significant system requiring long-term investment, collection, and nurturing.
If you are a Hunter player - or simply interested in the class - the following overview of the pet system will help you get up to speed quickly in WoW Forever.
Pet System Overview
With the return of rare elite and rare creature mechanics, the number of tameable rare pets has increased significantly, offering Hunters a wider range of choices for collection and training.
Furthermore, nearly every pet family has gained new active or passive abilities, resulting in a much richer overall ability pool compared to the original Vanilla game.
These abilities are not distributed haphazardly; they are directly linked to a pet's functional category and family traits.
Pets are classified into three functional categories: Defense, General, and Offense, while their specific family determines which special abilities they can utilize.
Consequently, when selecting a pet, players should look beyond mere aesthetics; they must consider family abilities and categories to evaluate how the pet will actually perform in WoW Forever combat.

Tame Beast
Players must reach level 10 to learn Tame Beast ability. While Hunter experience between levels 1 and 10 may feel somewhat tedious, it improves significantly once level 10 is reached.
When taming, it is advisable to use Aspect of the Monkey to boost your dodge chance, or to trigger a Freezing Trap and stand inside it to minimize incoming damage.
Once successfully tamed, the pet becomes subject to Happiness and Loyalty systems. Happiness directly impacts the pet's damage output: an Unhappy pet deals only 75% of its normal damage, a Content pet deals 100%, and a Happy pet deals 125%.
Feeding your pet grants a temporary buff; however, avoid feeding it repeatedly while the effect is active - wait until the buff expires before feeding it again.
Typically, spending a small amount of WoW Forever gold at Auction House to acquire two pieces of meat is enough to restore a pet's status from Unhappy to Happy.
Loyalty increases as the pet fights and gains experience; a pet must earn experience from monsters that grant XP to level up and acquire training points, which are used to learn abilities such as Growl and Natural Armor.

Learning and Teaching Abilities
In WoW Classic+, pet abilities are categorized as either active or passive and come in various ranks.
To have a pet learn a specific ability, you must first have a pet that already knows it use that ability in combat; your character then has a chance to learn it. Once learned, you can teach it to other eligible pets via Beast Training.
Pets can possess a maximum of four active abilities, so players must choose their combinations wisely. Different pet families possess unique abilities, such as Bear's Swipe, Cat's Prowl, Boar's Charge, and Crab's Pinch.
These abilities allow pets to adapt to various gameplay scenarios in WoW Forever, including PvE, PvP, tanking, and area-of-effect (AoE) damage.
Pet Families and Selection
As previously mentioned, pets fall into three main categories: Defense, General, and Offense, each with its own specific role:
- Defense: Typically possesses higher health and defense, making them suitable for tanking.
- General: Offers a balanced profile with team utility capabilities.
- Offense: Focuses on damage output or attack speed.
Wolf (General) is currently very popular among players because its Furious Howl ability boosts the party's melee attack power.
When selecting a pet, the family-exclusive ability is often the most critical factor; for instance, you might choose Bear's Swipe for AoE damage or Boar's Charge for PvP crowd control.
Important Considerations
However, players should note that in WoW Classic Plus, certain passive abilities - such as Faster Attack - cannot be learned or upgraded.
This forces players seeking optimal performance to capture specific pets; for example, only certain Cats or Wolves possess this passive ability, meaning other pets of the same type might be inferior even if they are at a higher level.
Additionally, the automatic use of abilities currently lacks fluidity in the game; players have reported occasional issues, and it remains uncertain whether this will be improved by the time WoW Forever officially launches.
Additionally, some low-level zones lack Hunter Trainers, so players leveling in certain low-level Undead or Orc areas within Eastern Kingdoms should keep this in mind.
Overall Hunter Experience
Hunter remains a fun and relatively relaxed class for leveling; the pet system incorporates mechanics akin to collecting and raising companions, making the overall experience highly enjoyable.
However, when playing in a group, you must remember to dismiss your pet promptly to avoid accidentally aggroing extra monsters.
Hunters make up a large portion of the player base, and opinions on the class are mixed; this is partly because of the wide range of weapons and armor they can use, balanced against issues like pets potentially pulling unwanted mobs.
The gameplay experience improves significantly once you reach level 20 and unlock Aspect of the Cheetah and the ability to dual-wield weapons.
If you are still on the fence about Hunter, why not give it a try during WoW Forever beta? You might find the pet system even more entertaining than you expected!
