As the official launch date of World of Warcraft: Forever approaches, the developers continue to release a wealth of key information through developer podcasts, official blue posts, and social media. From the visual redesign of Skyborne race to the underlying logic adjustments to the raid buff mechanic, and the balance goals for hybrid DPS, these decisions are outlining the core of WoW Classic Plus.
Skyborne Model Updates

The visual controversy surrounding Skyborne race has been ongoing since its debut at BlizzCon 2026. The core issue is that when the HD Skyborne characters stand alongside the classic races using SD models, there is a noticeable generational gap - facial details, hair treatment, and feature rendering all seem to come from two different games.
The official announcement has confirmed via blue post that SD versions of Skyborne character models and their Druid forms are under development and are expected to launch in early 2027.
The background to this decision deserves closer examination. In the post, the developers frankly admitted that when they initially chose to offer the SD/HD switching feature for player characters, they primarily focused on existing races from the original World of Warcraft, as many players have a deep emotional connection to these models.
However, community feedback clearly indicated that the HD Skyborne looked out of place in the same world, a sentiment the development team acknowledged. This is undoubtedly a positive sign for players who prefer the SD model's appearance and want more options.
Meanwhile, the existing HD Druid forms are also being refined. They stated that some overly smoothed visual effects will be removed, more detailed hair textures will be added, and overall color saturation will be adjusted.
Skyborne originates from an exotic environment, and its Druid form should reflect this unique background and racial characteristics. However, the development team also hopes that this exoticism will remain consistent with the overall visual language of World of Warcraft, avoiding any jarring appearance.

Raid Buff Debate: Party-Wide or Raid-Wide?
Currently, in WoW Forever raids, effects like Windfury Totem and Leader of the Pack only apply to the player's party, not the entire raid.
This mechanism persisted throughout Classic and TBC, and one of its original design principles was to allow support specializations to secure raid slots by providing irreplaceable party buffs - if a support spec had low individual damage, a strong party benefit
could be a reason for the raid to include them.
However, the cost of this mechanism is also very significant. Raid formation can easily become a shopping list precisely tailored to specific classes and even specializations.
For example, a raid might already have 15 players, but might have to search for a second Shaman because a party lacks Windfury; or they might have to wait for a Balance Druid or Shadow Priest because of a lack of mana batteries and a 3% crit bonus.
For casual guilds and even pickup groups, finding these final pieces of the puzzle not only increases group-making pressure but can also consume players' already limited playtime.
The developer podcast explicitly stated that raid-wide auras are under consideration. If these buffs are made raid-wide, one provider can cover the entire raid, significantly improving group-making flexibility.
However, risks arise - if the core buff only requires one player to provide, the remaining raid slots will no longer need to select specific support specs to complete the buff. For efficiency-oriented teams, the remaining slots are likely to further skew towards high-DPS classes, leading to excessive stacking of certain classes.
Hybrid DPS Balancing: Is 5% Enough?
Closely linked to the raid buff debate is the question of how much hybrid tax hybrid DPS should bear. The developers revealed in the podcast that they hope to control the damage gap between hybrid DPS and pure DPS specializations to around 5%, while balancing this by limiting the powerful off-healing abilities of DPS specializations. Compared to the often tens of percentage points of damage difference in Classic WoW, this is undoubtedly a significant shift.
Historically, during Molten Core era, top DPS classes like Fury Warrior consistently led, while hybrid classes such as Balance Druid, Retribution Paladin, and Elemental Shaman lagged significantly behind. In TBC and WotLK, this gap narrowed somewhat, but some hybrid classes still struggled to compete with top pure DPS classes.
The community is also clearly divided on the 5% target.
Supporters argue that hybrid classes offer greater utility. For example, Balance Druid, in addition to DPS, provides healing, battle resurrection, innervate, control, and dispel abilities, making the sacrifice of a small amount of personal DPS understandable.
Opponents, however, argue that the hybrid tax itself is an outdated design. If a specialization must suffer a long-term damage penalty simply because it can fulfill other responsibilities, then players choosing hybrid DPS are essentially paying the price for the class's versatility.
Therefore, the real issue isn't whether Hybrid should be 5% or 10% lower, but rather how to balance individual DPS and utility. If Forever wants to avoid repeating the huge class gap of the classic era, keeping Hybrid output close to pure DPS while reasonably limiting its powerful off-healing might be more reasonable than simply applying the traditional Hybrid tax.
Spell Ranks Controversy: Lack of Sense of Leveling Up and Mana Efficiency Dilemma
Spell Ranks system in WoW Forever raises another issue: should players immediately feel the improvement when upgrading new skills?
A typical example is that Rank 4 Frostbolt consumes 19 mana and deals 101-108 damage; Rank 5 requires 26 mana, but the damage only increases to 103-110. Mana consumption increases by about 37%, but the average damage increase is less than 2%.
This phenomenon isn't entirely without explanation. Spell damage scales with player level, so directly comparing the values of a late-game old rank with a newly learned rank easily underestimates the long-term value of the latter. Player testing also shows that the damage of the same spell can continue to increase after upgrading.
However, the problem remains: players should feel a clear upgrade feedback when unlocking a new rank. If the initial damage increase is negligible, but accompanied by a significantly higher mana cost, it easily makes one question whether the rank is worth spending WoW Forever gold.
Therefore, a more reasonable approach might be to provide a more noticeable damage increase upon unlocking a new rank, or to further smooth the mana and damage growth curves, making skill upgrades truly feel like a significant improvement.
Conclusion
From Skyborne's SD model to the range of raid buffs, from the 5% target advantage for hybrid DPS to the upgrade experience of spell ranks, WoW Classic+ is attempting to find a new balance between classic feel and modern gameplay.
None of these decisions are simple - party-wide buffs retain depth in group strategy but increase group costs; raid-wide buffs improve flexibility but may lead to class stacking; the 5% difference in hybrid classes attempts to draw a line between meaningful class differentiation and fair DPS competition, but where that line should be drawn remains a point of significant disagreement within the community.
However, these are currently directions under discussion, not finalized changes. For players looking forward to WoW Forever, actively participating in feedback and expressing their preferences on forums and in the community is perhaps more important than waiting for the final solution.
