Torchlight: Infinite SS14 Tartarus crams a complete prison management cycle into the rhythm of dungeon crawling and looting. Players are no longer just hunters, but take charge of a circular prison in Netherrealm as a warden, making trade-offs between hunting, taming, and suppressing prisoners.
The fun of this season's mechanics lies not in the instant gains, but in how each management decision cascades down to the final riot resolution.
Acquiring Prisoner Nameplates

Tartarus cycle begins with regular Netherrealm dungeon crawling. Escaped prisoners will randomly appear on the map; defeating them will reward you with Prisoner Nameplates. The number of nameplates determines the management rounds that can be unlocked, essentially your ticket to Tartarus prison sandbox.
This design seamlessly integrates seasonal gameplay with daily dungeon runs: players don't need to specifically stop building progression to participate in seasonal gameplay; instead, they can capture and escort escaped prisoners back to prison while continuously advancing through Netherrealm.
Upon entering the sandbox, players face a circular prison with 16 cells and a management phase lasting 20 in-game days. Here, days refer to actions, not real-world time; each move, swap, or use of torture devices consumes days.
With limited time and a finite cap on prisoner rarity, the core challenge of the management phase is how to cultivate as many high-rarity prisoners as possible using the shortest path.
The core logic of Tartarus management: Rarity and the food chain
Prisoners in Tartarus prison are arranged from lowest to highest rarity:
- Normal
- Magic
- Rare
- Legendary
- Supreme
- Chromatic (Rainbow)
The primary means of increasing rarity is devour. When a prisoner's head displays a tooth icon, it indicates that it can devour a fellow prisoner of the same rarity below it in the food chain, thus increasing its own rarity level.
The food chain's rock-paper-scissors relationship is the underlying rule of Tartarus gameplay: Mammoth beats Lion, Lion beats Wolf, Wolf beats Rat, and Rat, in turn, beats Mammoth at the top.
In actual gameplay, you don't need to memorize this chain; the tooth icon on the prisoner directly indicates the target it can devour. However, understanding the rock-paper-scissors relationship helps in advance on the board, avoiding placing key prisoners in the wrong adjacent positions.
Each rainbow prisoner is removed from the sandbox and individually housed, simultaneously granting a permanent Warden's Collection buff to the overall management.
While this buff doesn't directly participate in subsequent battles, its accumulated collection progress is linked to the quality of the final Warden's Caches. Therefore, the earlier you plan the rainbow prisoner synthesis path, the greater the benefit at the end of the game.
Torture Tools and Prison Incidents
In TLI SS14, prison management isn't limited to predation and evolution among prisoners. Torture tools and prison incidents are also crucial variables influencing the pace of prisoner development. Properly utilizing these mechanisms can improve cell layout, accelerate the development of high-rarity prisoners, and build an advantage for the final riot phase.
Torture Tools: Flexible Intervention in Prison Development
The value of torture tools lies not only in directly increasing prisoner rarity but also in breaking the limitations of the conventional food chain, creating new development opportunities on the board.
Some torture tools function around the swap mechanism, such as repositioning eligible prisoners or having a chance to directly upgrade prisoners below legendary rarity to legendary level.
The value of these torture tools lies in bypassing racial advantages - when there's a lack of suitable targets for consumption on the board, a successful torture tool trigger can directly create a usable high-rarity individual, opening a gap for subsequent chain consumption.
Another type of torture tools is triggered by devouring itself. Some have a chance to open random cells after consumption, making newly spawned prisoners available for consumption; others directly remove prisoners from the board and increase the rarity of remaining prisoners, but often come with the risk of accidentally harming high-value prisoners.
Prison Incidents: Choosing Between Random Gains and Development Efficiency
In addition to actively using torture devices, prison incidents can occur during prison management. Faced with different options in the interrogation room, players need to weigh the benefits based on the current situation.
Incitement
Incitement focuses on triggering additional prison events, creating new variables for subsequent management. Its value depends on the specific effects of the event and whether the player currently has the ability to utilize the new opportunities.
When the board lacks effective predators, or when players want to gain additional development and resource opportunities, the potential benefits of incitement can be prioritized.
Reward
Reward options focus on directly increasing prisoner rarity. When there are legendary prisoners on the board that are about to be developed, the random promotion of Reward may directly push them into the chromatic tier.
Riot Suppression and Warden's Caches

After the 20-day management period, the prisoners you've raised will become boss-level enemies. Once a riot breaks out, you must suppress three prison blocks in sequence, defeating prisoners to unlock the corresponding Warden's caches. Higher prisoner rarity offers greater potential rewards, but also means greater combat pressure.
Therefore, to balance high returns and efficient completion, you need to plan your prisoner development path and strengthen your character build in advance. To speed up equipment acquisition and improve overall combat capabilities, you can buy Torchlight Infinite Flame Elementium to prepare for the final suppression.
Followers: Additional Rewards from Prison Management
Tartarus doesn't only produce prisoners and Warden's caches. Letters of Introduction earned during management can be used to recruit followers in the interrogation room, converting the results of prison management into direct combat power.
Followers are divided into four groups: Lone Wolf, Mammoth, Witch Rat, and Lion Queen, each possessing unique Tartarus abilities that can provide buffs, protection, or debuffs to enemies within Netherrealm.
Followers do not occupy the player's original skill slots, and their skills drop with random auxiliary effects. Higher rank followers can equip more active and auxiliary skills.
In short, the core of Torchlight: Infinite Tartarus is to convert every hunt, instrument use, and event choice into long-term benefits within a limited number of management turns. A truly efficient warden not only needs to know how to cultivate high-rarity prisoners but also needs to find a balance between management costs, riot difficulty, and final rewards.
