Should You Choose Thief in MapleStory Classic World? - Skills, Jobs & Costs

PublishedPublished: Oct 29, 2026

Choosing a class in MapleStory Classic isn't just about damage numbers; more importantly, it's about how you navigate the next 30 levels before your second job advancement.

We believe Thief is an excellent choice because it's the only class with both ranged and melee branches, emphasizing movement and positioning rather than static combat.

Furthermore, its first job advancement is very easy to pick up, and the level 30 advancement is significant, albeit at a high cost, but manageable with proper planning. This article provides a detailed analysis of why players should choose Thief in MapleStory Classic World.

First Job Useful

In MSCW, you can advance Thief at level 10 by speaking with Dark Lord in Kerning City. A major advantage is the relatively low cost of early-game equipment, reducing reliance on starter weapons. This also helps conserve MapleStory Classic mesos for later skill upgrades, potions, and equipment acquisition.

Thief's signature skill is Lucky Seven. This dart skill is primarily boosted by luck and benefits from the weapon power of both claws and darts, making it a strong choice for early-game upgrades.

Besides this, there are several other skills. Nimble Body increases hit rate and evasion, helping you hit targets more consistently while reducing the chance of being hit. Keen Eyes increases the attack range of the darts, allowing you to attack monsters from a safer distance. Keen Eyes skill is particularly useful in the early game, increasing throwing distance by 50 points.

These skills may not seem flashy, but they provide a significant advantage in the early game. Compared to Warriors and Mages of the same level, Thief can level up much more easily in the early game thanks to their ranged attacks, higher evasion, and agile movement.

High Mobility

In MapleStory Classic World, Thief's greatest advantage lies in their ability to attack while moving. Lucky Seven skill allows you to throw darts at enemies from a distance, then quickly reposition and attack again, without having to stay in one place. You can even jump and attack simultaneously, with the darts flying upwards in an arc.

This allows Thief to easily hit enemies without having to stand directly in front of them, offering a completely different combat experience compared to melee classes that require close combat.

However, it's important to note that Thief has relatively low health, and the attack range of their throwing knives is limited in the early game. Fortunately, skill upgrades gradually compensate for these shortcomings. Keen Eyes skill is particularly important early on: it extends your attack range, helps you maintain a safer distance, and reduces the risk of missteps.

Upon reaching your second job advancement, you can learn Haste, a skill that increases your and nearby allies' movement speed and jump height. This is an extremely useful skill, whether leveling up or farming MS Classic mesos.

Two Distinct Specializations

A major reason to choose Thief in MapleStory Classic is the significant choice you gain at level 30. Unlike other classes with only a single development path, Thief can specialize in two distinct playstyles: Assassin and Bandit.

Assassins build centers on claws and darts, featuring skills such as Claw Mastery, Critical Throw, and Drain. Drain is particularly noteworthy, converting a portion of damage to health, thus enhancing Assassin's survivability during leveling. This path focuses on ranged single-target damage, high mobility, and a smooth leveling experience.

Bandits, on the other hand, specialize in melee combat using daggers. Savage Blow allows for multiple rapid attacks on a single target, while Steal stuns enemies and temporarily boosts the Assassin's attack power, providing additional utility. This makes Bandits a more direct and melee-oriented alternative to the ranged Assassin.

Both career paths are built on the same starting class, catering to different player needs. If you choose Claw-based Thief, skills like Lucky Seven and Keen Eyes can help you level up quickly before becoming a Keen Eyes.

If you prefer daggers, Double Stab provides a more suitable starting point for Bandit path, and since daggers are one-handed weapons, you can also equip a shield.

Cost Issues

Assassins are relatively inexpensive in the early game, but are known for their high equipment costs later on, especially if you choose Assassin path, as darts are consumables, and higher-level darts are expensive or difficult to obtain.

Each attack consumes one dart, so you need to replenish them regularly. Therefore, in addition to the funds needed for the equipment itself, you need to set aside a budget specifically for acquiring darts. The best way is to buy MS Classic World mesos when there are discounts and stockpile them. Our 24/7 automated system will ensure that your funds are sent to your account within 30 minutes.

Bandits do not consume dart ammo; however, this does not mean that their maintenance costs are low. Bandits excel at melee combat, making them more susceptible to contact damage, which increases potion consumption while leveling. At max level, each use of Savage Blow costs 28 mana; frequent use will quickly deplete your mana.

Neither of Thief's two career paths is entirely cost-effective. The real difference lies in where you spend your money. Therefore, I suggest you plan your spending based on your preferred playstyle, reserving enough mesos for necessities, and not investing all your funds in other equipment before considering leveling costs.

Comparison with Other Classes

Warrior is a durable melee class with high health, no ammo consumption, and much lower economic pressure, but poor attack range and mobility. Bowman, like Thief, is a ranged agility character, but sacrifices burst damage and agility for more consistent damage output.

Magician uses INT-based magic, consuming MP instead of ammo. While offering a wide variety of elements, early game potion consumption is high, requiring a large amount of MapleStory Classic World mesos, and casting is relatively cumbersome. In contrast, Thief offers a flexible combination of normal attacks and burst skills.

The above is a detailed analysis of MSCW Thief brought to you. For players who pursue speed, attack range, and the freedom to choose between precision and aggression, Thief is the best choice. Why not try it out in the game now? I believe you will be pleasantly surprised.
