Paladin performed very poorly in Seasons 13 and 14, as the official nerfs went a little too far. However, things have improved significantly for the class in Season 15, with some players reaching Pit Tier 150 using this build.
Shield of Retribution Paladin revolves around Thorns damage. By stacking Thorns and using Shield of Retribution, you can convert your defensive stats into massive damage. Compared with other builds, it offers exceptional survivability while maintaining high damage output.

Season 15 Buffs
Shield of Retribution Paladin is particularly powerful in Season 15 because it has received several buffs that increase its damage. As a result, the build combines high damage, tremendous survivability, simple gameplay, and excellent clearing potential without requiring a complicated skill rotation.
You only need to activate your auras, build Resolve with Rally, and repeatedly cast Shield of Retribution. Meanwhile, enemies that attack you will also suffer Thorns damage.
The first major buff increased Paladin's Strength coefficient from 1.25 to 1.625. This means every 10 points of Strength now provide a 1.625% damage increase instead of 1.25%. Since this build already prioritizes stacking Strength, the change directly improves its overall performance.
The most important change is that Shield of Retribution now gains a higher Thorns percentage from additional Blessed Shield skill ranks. Previously, extra ranks primarily increased the skill's regular damage. In Diablo 4 Season 15, however, stacking skill ranks also strengthens its Thorns pulses. This allows weapon damage, Strength, Thorns, and skill ranks to contribute to your overall DPS.
Juggernaut Oath has also been improved, with its damage bonus increasing from 80% to 100%. Shield of Retribution is a Juggernaut Skill, so spending Resolve now creates a more powerful damage window. Skill Enhancements

The core of Shield of Retribution Paladin is Shield of Retribution variant of Blessed Shield. It transforms Blessed Shield into a Juggernaut Skill that advances forward and repeatedly pulses, dealing a percentage of your Thorns damage before exploding for a massive finishing hit.
It also gains additional damage based on your shield's Block Chance, allowing your defensive shield to directly enhance your offensive power.
Clash is your basic skill and can be used to finish off enemies when necessary, but Blessed Shield remains your primary source of active damage. Most of the time, you simply need to keep throwing it.
You will also use three auras: Fantasm Aura, Defiance Aura, and Holy Light Aura. They provide offensive and defensive bonuses, helping the build increase damage, withstand heavy hits, and maintain constant pressure on enemies.
Fantasm Aura's active effect makes nearby enemies Vulnerable, causing them to take increased damage. Keep in mind that Vulnerable and Weaken are both debuffs, but neither is a form of crowd control.
Shield of Retribution Paladin Gear
| Slots | Gear |
|---|---|
| Mythic Unique Helm | Leoric's Crown |
| Mythic Unique Chest Armor | Enigma |
| Legendary Gloves | Lapa's Scripture |
| Mythic Unique Pants | Tibault's Will |
| Mythic Unique Boots | Penitent Greaves |
| Mythic Unique Amulet | Blood-Mad Idol & Dominance |
| Mythic Unique Ring | Ring of Starless Skies |
| Mythic Unique Ring | Stone of Jordan |
| Legendary Flail | Redirected Force |
| Mythic Unique Shield | Ward of the White Dove |
If you are not aiming for maximum damage, you can use regular items as a transitional setup to progress smoothly to Torment 12. Once you have sufficient resources, you can gradually upgrade your gear to Mythic Uniques.
If you can equip only one Mythic item upgraded through Horadric Cube but can still equip all Mythic items obtained through other methods, prioritize crafting Ward of the White Dove, followed by Blood-Mad Idol or Leoric's Crown.
Ward of the White Dove provides a massive multiplier to Blessed Shield while reducing its Faith cost. To maintain this buff, alternate other skills after every three Blessed Shield casts.
Ring of Starless Skies is also an excellent choice for this build. Its Resource Cost Reduction is particularly useful when you are outside Fortress, and it also provides an additional damage bonus.
Soul Splinters are special gems introduced in Season 15, and Leoric's Crown can amplify their effects. Prioritize socketing Abyssal Splinter of the Black Soulstone and Abyssal Splinter of Pain.
For gear affixes, prioritize Maximum Life, Life on Hit, and Life Regeneration to maintain survivability. On the Paragon Board, prioritize nodes and Glyphs that increase Block Chance, Thorns damage, and maximum Resolve.
Since damage is based on Thorns, skill ranks provide limited increases to Shield of Retribution's Thorns damage, so there is no need to stack them deliberately.
Talisman
This build uses Phoba of Radiant Fire set because its 500% damage bonus has better uptime and allows for a faster gameplay pace.
Apply Judgement with Holy Light Aura to activate and maintain this buff. However, this also means your damage takes time to ramp up during fights against Lair and Pinnacle bosses.
Phoba of Righteous Will set remains active on bosses at all times, making it a suitable alternative if you need to switch sets for boss farming.
The main drawback of this build is its relatively limited attack range, which makes it slower than top-tier farming builds. However, if you prefer straightforward gameplay, this is one of the best Paladin builds to play in Diablo 4 Season 15.
