Diablo 4 Future Roadmap after Season 15 | New Content without Major Expansions

Diablo 4 Season 15 is the biggest and widely regarded as the best season the game has ever had. Meanwhile, Diablo V has been officially announced and is expected to launch in 2.5 to 3 years, provided there are no further delays. In addition, the next new class, Amazon, has been confirmed to arrive as part of its own Class Pack.

However, the developers have confirmed that no further major expansions are planned for Diablo 4. Although more characters and Class Packs will still arrive in the future, the era of large-scale expansions is over. Does this mean Diablo 4 will no longer be a major focus for future updates?

Diablo 4 Future Roadmap after Season 15 | New Content without Major Expansions

Class Packs

One of the most noteworthy upcoming additions is Amazon Class Pack, expected to launch in the first half of 2027. So far, the developers have only announced Amazon itself.

However, Amazon Class Pack section in the official Diablo news center's information sheet explicitly states that additional features included in the pack will be revealed in the future.

This suggests that the pack will offer more than just a new class and could introduce other systems or features. In that sense, it could be considered a mini-expansion.

This approach is similar to Class Pack model used in Diablo III, where Necromancer, for example, arrived alongside several additional systems.

Future Diablo 4 Class Packs could be much larger than many players expect. The key assumption is that most of the content that would previously have been included in a major paid expansion will instead be delivered through seasons and Class Packs. However, the game will no longer feature massive campaigns that require extremely high production costs.

Main Story Campaigns

A typical campaign involves expensive CG cinematics, extensive voice acting, environmental set pieces, one-off boss encounters, and large amounts of content designed for a single playthrough.

Most players skip the campaign after completing it once, making the return on investment for this type of content less attractive.

However, this does not mean the game will stop telling stories. Future seasons will still follow an interconnected narrative, but their scope will be closer to Season 5: a handful of quests, some voice acting, and a storyline that unfolds throughout the season without being particularly lengthy.

The resources saved by scaling back campaign development will likely be redirected toward Diablo V. Meanwhile, Diablo 4 will continue receiving content that would traditionally have accompanied an expansion beyond its main campaign, including new classes, systems, balance changes, endgame content, Diablo 4 items, and potentially smaller areas or more replayable dungeons.

The Focus of New Seasons

In developer interviews around BlizzCon, the future of Diablo 4 was a recurring topic. Brent Gibson, one of the leaders responsible for Diablo 4, stated that Diablo is a universe spanning multiple games. The developers are even continuing to expand Diablo II through Warlock class.

As long as the community continues to support Diablo 4, the team intends to support its seasons over the long term, just as it has with Diablo II and Diablo III.

With Diablo II: Resurrected serving as a reference point, future seasons are likely to focus on new classes, major new systems, endgame content, balance overhauls, new items, and similar additions.

New areas appear less likely. If any are introduced, they will probably be smaller zones or locations designed for repeatable dungeon content rather than entire new continents.

Future Season Plans

The development team has stated that it has already planned content, systems, and overhaul directions through Season 18. This represents the portion of the roadmap currently planned, not a commitment to stop at Season 18.

Season 15 was made particularly substantial in part to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Diablo franchise. Even though Season 15 already offers a wealth of content, the developers have still held some additions back for release in future seasons.

These reserved additions could include other major antagonists from previous Diablo games. Based on the current seasonal storyline, Malthael could return in a future season. He might appear as a memory, spirit, or phantom and serve as an Uber Boss encounter.

Class and Item Overhauls

BlizzCon also revealed that one of Diablo 4's biggest priorities going forward is giving players more ways to create builds.

The developers have mentioned introducing new itemization systems, attributes, and affixes, gradually building on the existing foundations to enable more complex and diverse builds.

Season 15 already reflects this direction. Splinter mechanic, combined with items such as Leoric's Crown, creates new opportunities for different builds. Meanwhile, Diablo II's unique Runes and Runewords have significantly expanded the possibilities for character customization.

The developers have also indicated that they will expand different aspects of the game, including overhauling Mythic Uniques and Paragon system, to keep the experience fresh.

In addition, the team wants to expand War Plans and endgame skill trees, giving players more options for endgame activities and character customization.

Games such as Path of Exile 1 and Torchlight: Infinite do not frequently release large paid campaigns. Path of Exile 2 also initially began as a new campaign for Path of Exile 1 before evolving into a standalone game.

Compared with large-scale campaigns, expanding endgame systems and build options is a better fit for the seasonal update model used by ARPGs.

At the very least, Diablo 4 will probably continue receiving new seasons until Diablo V launches. Even after the release, the game could continue with smaller seasonal updates if its player base declines, or bring back older seasons in a format similar to Diablo II. Overall, the future of Diablo 4 still looks quite bright.
