D2R Ladder Season 13 Ultimate Runes Guide: Master These Secret Runewords & Recipes to Dominate the Ladder!

Category: D2 Resurrected Posted: Feb 25, 2026 Views: 1549

While all Diablo games share common background stories and some mechanics, their actual gameplay differs significantly. For example, runes/Runewords, merely one aspect of a build in Diablo 4, are crucial in D2R.

Recently, with the release of the new DLC and Ladder Season 13, new Runewords have been added, meaning you must further delve into utilizing rune-related mechanics to efficiently improve your character in the new season.

Below, we'll provide a detailed explanation of how runes and Runewords work in Diablo 2: Resurrected and recommend the best combinations.

D2R Season 13 Ultimate Rune Guide: Master These Secret Runewords & Recipes to Dominate the Ladder!

What are D2R runes and Runewords?

In this game, runes are magical items that can be socketed into gear, providing additional buffs to your gear through their unique powers. Visually, they are gray gems engraved with special inscriptions.

Runewords, on the other hand, combine different runes and then attach them to gear in a specific order. D2R Runewords not only provide more powerful buffs but can also convert gear into Runic items.

Note that to utilize these mechanics, you must ensure you are playing in full expansion mode; Classic version does not include rune-related gameplay.

How to obtain runes?

The conventional way to obtain runes is through direct drops from defeated enemies. Sometimes, when rarer container rewards drop, you can also open new runes.

Another method is less about obtaining and more about upgrading runes. It requires you to have enough low-level runes and gems of a specific type and quality, then craft higher-level runes using Horadric Cube.

How to upgrade runes?

First, you need to complete the main quest to enter Act 2 Halls of the Dead and defeat Bloodwitch the Wild, who guards Horadric Cube, to obtain the item.

Afterwards, you can place the corresponding materials into the cube according to the recipe of the item you want to craft, and then click the convert button at the bottom.

Besides high-level runes, the cube also allows you to craft potions, amulets, and other items, and also provides services for gear upgrades or other item quality enhancements.

Generally, to upgrade runes in Horadric Cube, you need to place 2 or 3 low-level runes (the number depends on the specific level of the runes) and a designated gem. Besides the most basic El, other runes can be obtained through upgrades:

  • Eld: 3x El
  • Tir: 3x Eld
  • Nef: 3x Tir
  • Eth: 3x Nef
  • Ith: 3x Eth
  • Tal: 3x Ith
  • Ral: 3x Tal
  • Ort: 3x Ral
  • Thul: 3x Ort
  • Amn: 3x Thul, 1x Chipped Topaz
  • Sol: 3x Amn, 1x Chipped Amethyst
  • Shael: 3x Sol, 1x Chipped Sapphire
  • Dol: 3x Shael, 1x Chipped Ruby
  • Hel: 3x Dol, 1x Chipped Emerald
  • Io: 3x Hel, 1x Chipped Diamond
  • Lum: 3x Io, 1x Flawed Topaz
  • Ko: 3x Lum, 1x Flawed Amethyst
  • Fal: 3x Ko, 1x Flawed Sapphire
  • Lem: 3x Fal, 1x Flawed Ruby
  • Pul: 3x Lem, 1x Flawed Emerald
  • Um: 2x Pul, 1x Flawed Diamond
  • Mal: 2x Um, 1x Topaz
  • Ist: 2x Mal, 1x Amethyst
  • Gul: 2x Ist, 1x Sapphire
  • Vex: 2x Gul, 1x Ruby
  • Ohm: 2x Vex, 1x Emerald
  • Lo: 2x Ohm, 1x Diamond
  • Sur: 2x Lo, 1x Flawless Topaz
  • Ber: 2x Sur, 1x Flawless Amethyst
  • Jah: 2x Ber, 1x Flawless Sapphire
  • Cham: 2x Jah, 1x Flawless Ruby
  • Zod: 2x Cham, 1x Flawless Emerald

Note that conversion and upgrade results are irreversible, so think carefully before clicking the conversion button!

How to use Runewords?

Obtaining Runewords requires having the corresponding runes, which are then inserted into the gear in order. However, to make this mechanism work correctly, you need to understand some additional tips.

First, Runewords only work with non-magic socketed gear, i.e., grey-text gear items with sockets. You must ensure that Runeword matches the target gear type, unless Runeword is compatible with multiple gear types, such as Spirit or Phoenix.

Different Runewords require different numbers of runes, commonly ranging from 2 to 6. Therefore, the number of sockets on the item must correspond to the specific number of runes. Combining short Runewords is also not possible.

In summary, the number of runes, the insertion order, and the gear type - any error in any of these aspects will prevent Runeword from functioning correctly. While this makes the mechanics cumbersome, the benefits make it all worthwhile.

How to obtain non-magic socketed gear?

This type of gear isn't difficult to obtain; it can drop as a drop after completing regular game content. The key is that the conditions for Runewords to function are quite demanding, requiring you to periodically farm specific socketed gear.

To do this, you need to lower your character's Magic Find score, then enter Secret Cow Level to farm normal socketed gear, and finally take them to Larzuk to socket them.

If your gear doesn't have any sockets, you can add them using Horadric Cube. However, any gear with existing sockets, or non-normal unsocketed gear, cannot gain additional sockets this way.

The maximum number of sockets a gear type can have is randomly generated, but the higher the item level, the greater the chance of generating more sockets. The specific Horadric Cube recipe requirements are as follows:

  • Socketed Weapon: 1x Normal Unsocketed Weapon, 1x Ral, 1x Amn, 1x Perfect Amethyst
  • Socketed Chest Armor: 1x Normal Unsocketed Chest Armor, 1x Tal, 1x Thul, 1x Perfect Topaz
  • Socketed Head Armor: 1x Normal Unsocketed Head Armor, 1x Ral, 1x Thul, 1x Perfect Sapphire
  • Socketed Shield: 1x Normal Unsocketed Shield, 1x Tal, 1x Amn, 1x Perfect Ruby

Best Runeword choices

While some Runewords with more runes are more powerful, shorter Runewords are just as practical, require fewer runes, and have more readily available compatible gear.

In addition, you can choose Runewords with extra bonuses based on your class, but this also means you need to farm or upgrade specific runes. Therefore, we usually recommend choosing the following more widely applicable options:

  • Stealth (Chest Armor)
  • Peace (Chest Armor)
  • Lore (Helm)
  • Ancient's Pledge (Shield)
  • Rhyme (Shield)
  • Spirit (Shield)
  • Steel (Axe, Mace, Sword)
  • Leaf (Staff)
  • Zephyr (Missile Weapon)
  • Pattern (Claw)
  • Edge (Missile Weapons)
  • Spirit (Sword)
  • Strength (Several Weapons)
  • Honor (Several Weapons)
  • Insight (Polearm, Staff)

Alternatively, if you'd like to try something new, you can obtain and socket the following new Runewords introduced in Ladder Season 13:

  • Authority (Body Armor)
  • Coven (Helm)
  • Void (Dagger)
  • Vigilance (Grimoire, Shield, Voodoo Head, Auric Shield)
  • Ritual (Dagger)

That concludes our introduction. Acquiring and using runes/Runewords is a lengthy process that requires patience and a significant investment of time and effort. We hope our guide has been helpful!
