Two weeks have flown by! In the blink of an eye, we're less than a day away from the release of Charting the Unknown, the first DLC for Crimson Desert, following its initial delay.
Whether you've already played the base game or are planning to jump in for the first time with this DLC, there are a few important things to keep in mind, both in-game and out.
Below, we've compiled some key information to help you hit the ground running the moment Charting the Unknown goes live, while also helping you avoid a few common pitfalls.
Unlocking DLC: Things to Know
First, Charting the Unknown is scheduled to launch on October 29 at 3:00 PM PDT. Be sure to convert this to your local time zone, and don't forget to pre-order if you haven't already, pre-ordering also nets you an exclusive diving suit!
Please note that this DLC is not a standalone title; you must own the base game, Crimson Desert, to play it. Unlocking DLC alone won't grant you access.
Additionally, if you're planning to unlock the base game, be aware that there are two versions currently available on Steam: Enhanced edition and Enhanced Deluxe edition. The latter includes a Deluxe Pack, but it does not include this new DLC.
So if you're just looking to play the game and aren't interested in Deluxe Pack, be careful not to accidentally unlock Enhanced Deluxe edition thinking it includes DLC!
- Crimson Desert Enhanced: $69.99
- Crimson Desert Enhanced Deluxe: $79.99
- Crimson Desert Charting the Unknown: $24.99
The connection between DLC and the base game
Beyond simply owning the base game, there are several in-game requirements to access the content in Charting the Unknown.
For instance, to unlock the new storylines for the characters Kliff, Oongka, and Damiane, you must first complete the main campaign in the base game and then access Journal menu. If you wish to explore the ocean-related content, you'll need to have completed at least Chapter 3: Howling Hill.
To avoid having to backtrack for missed objectives and to ensure you follow the narrative and core mechanics in the intended order, we highly recommend fully experiencing the base game before diving into DLC.
However, if you are more interested in DLC and wish to skip some of the early-game progression, you can buy Crimson Desert items online to quickly acquire resources or unlock achievements.
New Content in DLC
Beyond optimizations to the base game and expansions to existing content, Charting the Unknown introduces a wealth of new features to Crimson Desert.
Core focus: Maritime exploration
In the base game of Crimson Desert, the seas to the east and south of the continent of Pywel serve merely as scenery. DLC transforms these areas into a new hub for exploration, waiting for you to discover what lies within.
To access this gameplay, you must progress to a specific point in the main storyline and establish Graymane camp, which unlocks the full shipbuilding system.
In Charting the Unknown, ships are more than just a means of transport along fixed routes; they are part of a comprehensive shipbuilding system.
You will need to farm resources on land, through combat or by completing quests, to construct vessels at a shipyard. You can customize the appearance of your ships and, most importantly, equip them with combat cannons.
Once you set sail, you may encounter armed pirate factions near islands along your route. To protect your interests and expand your influence overseas, you must fend off these foes. You might even cross paths with mysterious ghost ships.
Diving beneath the waves
If you grow weary of ship-based combat, you can don a diving suit and venture into the underwater world of Crimson Desert.
The diving suit extends your breath-holding capacity, allowing you to scour the seabed for shipwrecks, ancient ruins, and hidden treasures.
Naturally, you may also encounter formidable underwater bosses; defeating them will test not only your combat prowess but also your ability to manage your oxygen supply.
The development team has also introduced mechanics exclusive to the underwater realm, including unique crafting systems and modes of movement.
You can mine rare ores to synthesize materials for high-tier gear, and beyond simple swimming, you can pilot submersibles or even ride large marine creatures.
It's also worth noting that you can even bring your pets into the deep sea, simply craft and equip them with their own custom-made mini diving suits!
Deepening connections with NPCs and camp
As you progress through the main storyline of Crimson Desert, your bonds with three key NPCs, Kliff, Oongka, and Damiane, will continue to grow.
Interestingly, Charting the Unknown DLC takes this even further: you can deepen your relationships with specific NPCs to the point of romance and even marriage!
This mechanic does more than just add gameplay variety; it also strengthens the ties between these NPCs and your camp.
Consequently, your camp in Crimson Desert evolves beyond a mere functional hub for storing loot, it becomes deeply integrated with new social systems and other creative gameplay elements.
DLC introduces a housing construction system, allowing you to design and decorate the interiors of your strongholds and castles to suit your preferences.
You can also utilize various facilities within your settlements to open shops and generate income, much like a built-in management mini-game.
Boss Rush
Introduced in Charting the Unknown DLC, this endgame mode becomes available once you have completed the main storyline.
In Boss Rush, you are placed within an enclosed arena where waves of formidable bosses emerge. Your objective is to hold your ground and defeat each enemy in succession to unlock substantial rewards, including unique, top-tier gear.
That covers everything we have to share for now. Once Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown officially launches, there will be plenty more details for you to discover firsthand! Stay tuned!
