Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and Warzone Season 1 will officially launch on November 6th. This is not only the first full season since MW4's release, but also marks the official completion of Warzone's annual content integration for the new title, ushering in a new round of weapon, character, and game mechanic updates.
For players planning to return, or those considering how to allocate their hard drive space, it's worthwhile to understand the download size, content changes, and cross-mode integration of this update in advance.
MW4 Season 1 Download and Storage Space
Pre-downloads of Modern Warfare 4 Season 1 have appeared on Battle.net, with data showing the PC update package is approximately 63GB. This number seems large, but it doesn't necessarily mean the game will occupy the same amount of additional storage space after the update.
This update is more like a file replacement and structural adjustment than simply adding new content. With Warzone transitioning from last year's title to MW4, some old files will be cleaned up, and the new weapon, character, and progression systems will be integrated. Therefore, the actual increase in hard drive space is expected to be less than the download package size.
For players planning to install other large games, it is recommended to allocate sufficient space in advance. After all, Season 1 is just the beginning; subsequent Season 1 reloaded updates and other season updates will continue to bring new maps, modes, and game resources.
Multiplayer: Three Launch Maps Debut, Wager Match Begins Season Challenge
Modern Warfare 4 Season 1 brings three launch maps to Multiplayer: the new medium-sized 6v6 map Backstab, the canyon-themed map Canyon, and the remastered Shoot House.
Backstab is set in a snow-covered town ravaged by war, emphasizing vision control and flanking maneuvers; Canyon takes place in a canyon surrounded by rocky cliffs, with open firefight areas demanding greater skill in positioning and timing. Maps such as Mid-Season, Ministry, and Overflow will also be added to the rotation. In terms of game modes, Possession and Infected have already been used in the preseason to warm up for the Halloween season. Once Season 1 officially begins, the classic Grind mode will return, and Drop Zone will also be reinstated to the rotation.
For players who want to familiarize themselves with different maps and modes and practice weapon handling, they can also choose to buy MW4 bot lobbies to save time on weapon upgrades and reward unlocks at the start of the season.
Another noteworthy feature of this season is Wager Match Event, spanning Multiplayer, DMZ, and Warzone. Players need to complete challenges to collect trophies and gradually unlock event rewards.
Among them, the exclusive variant mode Gauntlet 1v1 Gunfight combines one-on-one duels with trophy battles, allowing players to progress through rewards while winning matches, adding a new objective to multiplayer matches at the start of the season.
DMZ: Deep into X01 Underground Facility
If Season 1 brings one of the most noteworthy new features to DMZ, it's undoubtedly Designation: X01.
X01 is not a traditional open-world map, but rather an underground facility located on the outskirts of Hajin. According to official intelligence, it was formerly a Russian site, currently occupied by North Korea forces, and is linked to the weapons manufacturer GRANIT Arms, making it a highly guarded and secret facility.
Players will need to delve into X01, exploring cargo holds, vehicle depots, laboratories, and production lines, gradually advancing deeper into the facility to ultimately attempt to enter the sealed Deep Vault. Unlike regular map exploration, this operation focuses on overcoming layers of defense to uncover the hidden contents of the underground facility.
The enemy composition has also been upgraded. Lieutenant-level Tae-Hyun (Knuckle) and Chol-Min (The Wrench) will join Boss Board, while Commanders faction will be led by the Juggernaut unit known as The Captain. Facing enemies of varying levels, players will need to prepare Modern Warfare 4 DMZ items and adjust their strategy based on the battle situation.
In addition, Season 1 will introduce new Orders, enemies, and equipment, and unlock more exploration and reward content. These updates make X01 more than just a location expansion; they also bring new combat objectives and long-term exploration motivation to DMZ.
Warzone Fully Integrated: Two New Maps and Progress Reset
The most significant change this season is the official integration of Warzone into Modern Warfare 4's annual content.
Starting November 6th, all 33 launch weapons from MW4 will be available in Warzone, with new weapons released in subsequent seasons also joining simultaneously. At the same time, Tactical Sprint will be open to all players, and Apex Attachments, daily challenges, and Battle Pass progress will be shared between MW4 and Warzone.
This means that the progression systems of the two games will be further integrated. Players who previously primarily played Multiplayer or DMZ can now extend their weapons and battle pass progress to Warzone, eliminating the fragmented seasonal progression experience between the two games.
In terms of maps, Hajin will be the new standard Battle Royale map, featuring 13 main POIs, ranging from urban combat zones and open farmland to the northern political prison and air base, offering more options for different combat styles.
The map also incorporates dynamic weather changes such as clear skies, fog, wind, and rain, altering visibility and engagement distances with the environment.
Another new map, Zodiac, is designed specifically for Resurgence. Compared to Hajin, it is more compact, with a faster pace of combat, and its layout emphasizes vertical mobility and close-quarters combat. The classic maps Verdansk and Rebirth Island are expected to return in Resurgence.
In addition to map and weapon updates, players will also face a significant progress reset. After the new integration launches, player and weapon levels will be recalculated, and older weapons will be relegated to the Legacy tab.
These weapons will still be usable, but will no longer be supported for modification via Gunsmith, and some older skins and camouflage will be subject to new inheritance rules. For veteran players who have invested a significant amount of time, this means re-accumulating levels and weapon progress; however, for new players, the new season provides a relatively level playing field.
With the full integration of MW4 weapon pool, maps, and progression system into Warzone, this integration effectively kicks off a new content cycle for the game.
Conclusion
Season 1 of Modern Warfare 4 and Warzone occupies a pivotal position: it needs a substantial and compelling content release to draw players away from the inertia of the previous installment, while simultaneously avoiding raising the barrier to entry to an unappealing level.
The depth of X01, the scale of Hajin, the addition of 33 weapons, and Wager Match event across all modes constitute a solid initial framework; while the 63 GB preload and file replacement logic makes this update feel more like a reload than simply adding more weight.
For returning veterans and newcomers alike, Season 1 presents a suitable opportunity to re-familiarize themselves with the game, experience new content, and begin the next phase of their progress.
