You've probably already noticed the poor weapon balancing in ARC Raiders. The "mismatch between description and performance" is causing many players to lose motivation and interest in acquiring high-tier weapons.

If you're not just playing ARC Raiders casually, but are truly focused on its core mechanics, then you might be curious about the phenomenon and its causes.

Based on this, this analysis will explore the specific manifestations of insufficient weapon strength development in the game, using the differences between weapons that use heavy ammunition in ARC Raiders as a starting point.

What is ARC Raiders heavy ammo?

You can only attack enemies with your guns in ARC Raiders if you have ammunition. Currently, there are six types of ammunition available:

  • Light Ammo
  • Medium Ammo
  • Heavy Ammo
  • Shotgun Ammo
  • Launcher Ammo
  • Energy Clip

Heavy ammunition is primarily used for long-range combat, offering higher impact and damage, making it more suitable for dealing with heavily armored large ARC robots. The drawbacks include a slower rate of fire, longer reload time, and a smaller stack size.

This ammo can be exchanged for 900 coins per stack (10 bullets) from NPC Tian Wen, or crafted after meeting the following requirements:

  • 3x Metal Parts
  • 2x Chemicals
  • At Workbench 1

Which weapons use heavy ammo?

Each ammunition type in ARC Raiders has its own compatible weapons. The firearms that use heavy ammo include Ferro, Anvil, and Bettina. Their main information is as follows:

Ferro:

  • Rarity: Common
  • Damage: 40
  • Fire Rate: 6.6
  • Range: 53.1
  • Acquisition Method: Scavenging, crafting, trading with Tian Wen

Anvil:

  • Rarity: Uncommon
  • Damage: 40
  • Fire Rate: 16.3

Bettina:

Comparison of all heavy ammo guns

Based on the information we've listed, Bettina is the rarest of all heavy ammo guns and requires the corresponding ARC Raiders blueprint to craft it.

However, in terms of both base stats and practical performance, Bettina is no better than Ferro and Anvil, and its crafting, upgrading, and repair requirements are also much higher.

Although Ferro is a full-sized bolt-action rifle, its damage is similar to a pistol, and it lacks a scope, penetration bonus, or other notable features, making the overall experience feel like a low-end version of Anvil.

In comparison, Anvil is the most worthwhile and best-performing heavy ammo gun, while Bettina is more like a luxury item that looks good but lacks substance. While Ferro's performance is also mediocre, this is acceptable considering its rarity.

Heavy ammo guns don't perform well enough

Although we've chosen Anvil as the best heavy ammo gun currently available based on comparison, from an overall perspective, all heavy ammo guns fail to meet the expected standards: higher damage and armor penetration.

From a design perspective, heavy ammo guns should be effective against more dangerous, larger ARC enemy types, which also aligns with their requirement for more crafting and upgrade materials.

However, in actual combat, existing heavy ammo guns fail to deliver. While their single-shot damage is high, they lack decisive suppressive power against high-armor targets, and the damage is excessive when used against low-to-medium level enemies.

On the other hand, heavy ammo has a lower stackable quantity, meaning that with limited inventory space, you need to dedicate more slots to ammo if you want to rely on heavy ammo guns to take down enemies.

Therefore, when you equip heavy ammo guns for an adventure, you're bound to end up with fewer loot items than players of the same level.

Combined with the lack of outstanding kill efficiency, fewer and fewer players are willing to choose heavy ammo guns, preferring to equip light or medium options instead.

After all, in a team setting, it's still possible to defeat large enemies using ammo with lower single-shot damage.

How to improve this problem?

To improve the practicality of heavy ammo guns, we can consider two approaches: enhancing the weapons themselves or adding special ARC robot mechanisms.

For example, further strengthen their armor-piercing capabilities based on the main characteristics of these weapons, or add unique mechanisms that give them advantages that light and heavy weapons cannot provide.

Of course, simply increasing damage values and stacking limits, or reducing ammo consumption, are also viable options, but these approaches are less sustainable in the long run and may lead to static inflation later in the game.

Developers could also upgrade other weapons to heavy ammo guns, or add new ones, and establish more reasonable mechanics to make them commonly used heavy ammo guns, gradually phasing out the less effective ones.

Additionally, don't forget that you can equip weapons with attachments. Therefore, this perspective can also be considered, introducing more exclusive attachments or modifiers for heavy ammo guns.

To further enrich the difficulty and gameplay, the blueprints and crafting materials for these exclusive modifiers could be made harder to obtain, increasing player motivation and engagement.

The core problem with the existing ARC Raiders heavy ammo guns is that, while there are good options like Anvil, the overall investment and return are severely unbalanced.
