WoW Forever Progression System Is Immature: The Real Reason the Potential Gear Reset Sparked Player Panic

Although the official launch is still nearly a month away, WoW Forever has clearly become the hottest title in the series of late. Yet, beneath this thriving surface, a recent interview with the developers has revealed a potential crisis.
The issue centers on WoW: Forever's character progression system, as developers have indicated that a gear reset might be implemented around the time of the official launch.
It is worth noting that WoW Classic+ employs a novel progression mechanism combining horizontal progression with vertical leveling; if a gear reset is required to sustain it, wouldn't that represent a departure from the original vision?
Here, we analyze this issue and the developers' specific responses, exploring how WoW: Forever can break through the impasse facing its progression system.

The drawbacks of purely vertical progression system
Historically, character progression in World of Warcraft series has relied almost exclusively on vertical mechanics: players defeat new enemies and bosses to acquire superior gear, thereby unlocking access to higher-tier content.
While this approach encourages sustained player effort, the constant introduction of new tiers of enemies and items inevitably leads to two negative consequences: stat inflation and the abandonment of older game content.
What optimizations has WoW Forever introduced?
In the past, the development team addressed these issues by launching new servers or expansions, offering a fresh leveling experience through progression systems and starting points that effectively functioned as soft resets.
However, the downside was that these servers often had short lifespans, meaning BiS gear you had earned would quickly lose its value.
In contrast, given its positioning as a Classic+ title, the development team stated from the outset that WoW Forever was designed to be a server that runs "forever".
In WoW: Forever, you can level up your character, but you can also utilize Legacy System and gear specific to certain scenarios to enrich your horizontal progression experience and diversify your sources of WoW Forever gold farming.
What does the potential gear reset reveal?
Yet, even as this idealized progression system operates within WoW Forever beta, developers have hinted at the possible future introduction of a gear reset.
Whether this was an offhand remark or a deliberate probe, it reveals a lack of clear long-term planning in the development team's mechanical design; while they aim for longevity, they lack confidence that the current hybrid progression system, combining horizontal and vertical elements, will actually function as intended.
In fact, during interviews, developers equate the addition of new maps or dungeons with horizontal content expansion, but from the perspective of progression systems, this is essentially a conceptual sleight of hand.
True horizontal progression should allow you to unlock new mechanics, gameplay styles, or situational advantages without increasing your absolute combat stats or gear power.
However, the horizontal expansion described by the developers is really just vertical progression by another name. If the gear dropped in new dungeons has higher stats than the old gear, even if the difference is marginal, you will likely still end up chasing the new items.
Ultimately, while the rate at which old dungeons and their associated gear lose value might be slowed in WoW: Forever, their fate of eventual obsolescence remains unchanged; in other words, the game falls right back into the same old trap of vertical progression.

Limitations of BiS gear extension strategy
Although the prospect of a potential gear reset is disheartening, developers in the interview also proposed a strategy to keep certain BiS gear from early raids viable across different progression phases.
This approach has been seen on some legacy servers, but implementing it as a core part of WoW: Forever's progression could lead to severe balancing challenges.
For instance, if the stat boost from new gear is too small, players may lack sufficient incentive to engage with the new content; conversely, if the boost is too large, old gear will quickly become obsolete, dragging the game back into the old dilemma.
Furthermore, if combat mechanics tied to specific pieces of gear become unbalanced, it could trigger serious disparities in class performance or stat-related bugs, ultimately undermining the game environment.
How can this dilemma be resolved?
In terms of sheer popularity, World of Warcraft may hold the upper hand, but when it comes to the long-term continuity of game content and player experience, Old School RuneScape arguably takes the lead in MMORPG genre.
OSRS's core mechanics are largely point-and-click and tick-based, meaning you can play it as a second-screen game, dedicating only small amounts of time and attention while multitasking.
This low-intensity nature allows OSRS to feature progression curves spanning hundreds or even thousands of hours; players can steadily accumulate rewards without suffering from extreme fatigue.
Furthermore, the core gameplay of Old School RuneScape isn't solely focused on combat; instead, it integrates combat with casual life skills to create a tight, self-reinforcing loop.
In contrast, whether in WoW Forever or similar titles, virtually every activity is ultimately geared toward fast-paced combat, an approach that fundamentally conflicts with the requirements for long-term, "forever" sustainability.
Therefore, if WoW Forever hopes to break the mold, it needs to move beyond conventional thinking. It should adopt strategies from OSRS or similar games to overhaul its core mechanics and underlying logic, rather than remaining hamstrung by past pitfalls.
Ultimately, we hope the development team will heed recent player feedback and address issues with the progression system before WoW Forever officially launches, rather than delaying action until it is too late and the server becomes yet another casualty.
