In Path of Exile 2 endgame, simply possessing more dropped gear than others doesn't automatically make your build stronger; you need a solid understanding of item levels, affix pools, and crafting processes to truly unlock an item's potential.
Grasping Mail is a prime example: you have to put in considerable effort to acquire it in the game, and the subsequent crafting costs likely won't be cheap either.
However, if you approach the crafting process correctly, it allows you to blend affix pools from chest pieces, rings, and The Genesis Tree, enabling highly creative build possibilities.

Acquiring Grasping Mail
If you don't yet own a Grasping Mail in PoE 2 Patch 0.5.5, head to the area near The Ziggurat Refuge (south of Monastery of the Keepers). Speak to Ailith and progress through Breach questline until you unlock Flesh Flower Breach Atlas Passive.
Once that is done, Vruun, Marshal of Xesht has a chance to spawn and drop The Head of Vruun. Bring this item to The Genesis Tree to unlock Grasping Orchid.
This is the location where you can sacrifice 60 Breach Rings to obtain an unidentified Grasping Mail.
Moreover, there are no strict requirements regarding Breach Rings you use during this process: you can choose any of the eight types, whether using 60 of a single type or a mix of different ones.
Player feedback suggests that the specific types of rings used do not determine the quality of the resulting Grasping Mail; what truly matters is the item level of the rings.

How does item level affect the final result?
When preparing Breach Rings for Grasping Mail in PoE 2, don't focus solely on quantity.
Rings with high item levels have a significant impact on the outcome, though the resulting item level will not exceed the highest item level among the sacrificed rings.
For instance, if you sacrifice 59 rings with an item level below 75 and one ring with an item level of 80, Grasping Mail you receive will probably have an item level of 79.
However, if you use fifty-nine Level 82 rings and one Level 65 ring, you might very well end up with a Level 82 result.
Alternatively, if you mix four or five Level 82 rings into a batch of mostly Level 79–81 rings, you could still potentially obtain a Level 82 Grasping Mail.
Therefore, if you want a Grasping Mail with a higher item level, you need to be mindful of the levels of the rings you sacrifice; setting a target level first and managing the highest ring level used can save you a significant amount of materials.
Modifiers
Of course, the item level alone isn't enough to make your Grasping Mail truly powerful; you can further refine it using items like Chaos Orbs or Fracturing Orbs.
The unique feature of Grasping Mail is that its modifier pool can include standard body armour modifiers, ring modifiers, and The Genesis Tree modifiers simultaneously.
This means you can have offensive modifiers typically found on rings - such as Lightning Damage to Attacks or Increased Spell Damage - alongside effects exclusive to The Genesis Tree on this single piece of chest armour.
Crucially, you can re-roll The Genesis Tree modifiers using currency with no need to craft a brand-new Grasping Mail from scratch.
You can acquire a base item and continuously re-roll its modifiers in Path of Exile 2, though pursuing the absolute best stats will probably require a greater investment.
If you are aiming for specific modifiers like Spell Damage or Lightning Damage to Attacks, you can buy PoE2 currency in advance to prepare for the re-rolling process!
Quality Bonuses
Additionally, while Grasping Mail's base defense covers Armour, Evasion, and Energy Shield, you can still use Armourer's Scraps to increase their quality.
Catalysts - which drop from Breach mechanic - can be applied to this body armour just as they are to jewellery, boosting the values of specific modifiers. For instance, a Carapace Catalyst can enhance Energy Shield-related modifiers without altering Grasping Mail's base Armour or Evasion stats.
Think that's all there is to it? When regular quality reaches 20%, you still have the chance to use Vaal Infusers to boost both the regular quality and Breach quality simultaneously!
However, we should note that if you plan to Runeforging Grasping Mail later, the quality gained from Catalysts will be wiped out; so, be careful not to waste precious Catalysts too early on a base item that will eventually be reworked.
For which players is Grasping Mail suitable?
Currently, in PoE 2 Patch 0.5.5, this body armour leans more towards spell-casting and minion-based builds, as The Genesis Tree modifier is highly beneficial for them, while ring-related modifiers offer possibilities for other playstyles as well.
However, Grasping Mail has obvious downsides: it is difficult to acquire, and the modifier pool is vast, meaning that obtaining a specific combination of modifiers consumes a significant amount of PoE 2 currency. Even if you secure a solid base item, crafting a perfect finished product at a low cost is not guaranteed.
If you enjoy developing niche builds and take pleasure in the crafting process, then Grasping Mail is certainly a goal worth pursuing right now.
Try to get your hands on a Grasping Mail in PoE 2's Breach content and transform it into a powerful piece of gear yourself!
