Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.4.0 Abyss Mechanic Guide | How to Complete it to Earn Rewards?

Category: Path Of Exile 2 Posted: Jan 03, 2026 Views: 2973

Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.4.0 primarily focuses on the new Druid class and its related skills and builds, without adding many new elements to the gameplay itself.

Therefore, Abyss mechanic, introduced in Patch 0.3.0 and now integrated into the core gameplay, remains a popular feature. It strikes a good balance between fun and rewards, ensuring you can earn the necessary currency or materials while playing the game.

So, how has Abyss mechanic changed in Patch 0.4.0 compared to before? How can you maximize your gains from it? We'll provide an overview.

Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.4.0 Abyss Mechanic Guide | How to Complete it to Earn Rewards?

Abyss mechanic overview

You can encounter Abyss at any time in the game, but if you want to increase the probability of this event occurring, you can use Abyss Tablets, which have a chance to add modifiers that increase combat difficulty and rewards.

During the event, Abyssal Pits will appear around you. You need to defeat the monsters affected by Pits, as well as the final wave of Abyssal monsters corresponding to the level of the regular monsters you defeated earlier, to successfully seal Abyss.

Generally, the rarity correspondence between regular monsters and Abyssal monsters is as follows:

  • Normal: Abyssal
  • Magic: Abyssal Magic
  • Rare: Abyssal Rare
  • Essence: Abyssal Essence
  • Boss: Abyssal Larva Boss
  • Rogue Exile: Lichborn

Afterward, an Abyssal Trove containing loot may spawn, or a portal leading to the deeper Abyssal Depths may be triggered. These depths are filled with Abyssal monsters, but the chance and quantity of loot obtained are increased.

Abyssal bosses

Regular Abyssal bosses generally include Shroud Walkers and winged creatures. If you complete Abyss event in the endgame, you will trigger the higher-level Dark Domains instead of Abyssal Depths.

This area is not only more dangerous but also features the special boss Abyssal Commanders. Defeating this boss drops Kulemak's Invitation, which unlocks the pinnacle boss Kulemak's Vessel in Well of Souls.

Sometimes, after defeating the current map boss, if a completable Abyss event appears in the room, the boss Igrulog, Incubator Queen, may also spawn. Her attacks primarily deal cold damage and inflict poison.

Abyss mechanism rewards

After defeating all enemies, in addition to regular loot, you may also obtain the special currency Ancient Jawbone.

This currency is used after you unlock Well of Souls in Mastodon Badlands in Act 2. You can consume the bones there to craft your gear, adding a hidden Desecrated modifier.

Besides various Ancient Jawbones, completing Abyss events can also reward you with Lichborn Jewels, Lineage support gems, and Omens. The jewels and gems primarily enhance your character, while Omens are related to Abyss crafting.

These Omens can help you obtain desired modifiers in Abyss crafting through different specific effects, for example:

  • Omen of Abyssal Echoes: Rerolls three displayed modifiers.
  • Omen of Light: Removes unwanted modifiers.
  • Omen of Sinistral Necromancy / Omen of Dextral Necromancy: Ensures the next affix is a prefix or suffix.

Some unique Desecrated modifiers have a chance to appear naturally, but you can also obtain guaranteed drops of these modifiers by using the following Omens:

  • Omen of the Sovereign
  • Omen of the Blackblooded
  • Omen of the Liege

It's worth noting that theoretically you can obtain these rewards throughout the entire Abyss event, but the drop rate is usually higher when farming in Abyssal Depths.

What is the value of Abyss?

Abyssal monsters are always one level higher than the area you enter, meaning the potential item level of drops is higher, and a considerable amount of rewards are guaranteed.

Also, their layouts are currently very similar, so you can usually reach the end quickly and collect the rewards.

Around the edges of the event, you will usually find some rare chests. The upper left or middle is usually the main reward area, containing three to five chests guarded by several powerful rare monsters.

It's important to note that dying in Abyss will kick you out, and you will lose access. However, if you are in the endgame, dying will not consume your portals or resurrection attempts; it will only teleport you back to your previous location.

Currently, in Act 4's Ngakanu zone, there's a guaranteed Abyss encounter that leads to a deep dungeon. You can complete it, reset the area, and repeat the challenge indefinitely to maximize loot from Abyss event.

However, this mechanism is likely a bug and won't last forever, so it's best to take advantage of it while you can.

Abyss Atlas Tree

Besides various drop rewards, Abyss mechanism can also quickly help you level up your corresponding Abyss Atlas tree. It doesn't require the fast clear speed needed for Breach encounters, nor does it involve dealing with being surrounded by monsters like in Rituals.

When you complete an Abyss challenge in a map for the first time, you'll unlock two passive points, which you can invest in Stir the Swarm passive.

This will cause more Abysses to appear in subsequent maps, and there's a 5% chance that another nearby map will be occupied by Abyssal monsters, allowing you to unlock rewards by killing more Abyssal monsters when you enter that map.

Based on this, you can gain two more passive points, which you can invest in Sprawling Rupture passive, causing your Abysses to generate more monsters and spread them throughout the map.

Later, if you encounter and defeat Abyssal boss, you can gain even more passive points and invest them in Unholy Influence passive to generate more Abyssal monsters with powerful buffs.

In fact, Abyss mechanism hasn't changed much compared to before, so if you played it in Patch 0.3.0, you don't need to worry too much. The only thing to note is that even if you've farmed it many times, don't underestimate the final boss, Kulemak's Vessel.

Although Abyss event isn't difficult from the start, to ensure you can complete the entire event smoothly after triggering the deep dungeons, you need to fully strengthen your characters before the battle.

For this reason, we strongly recommend that you acquire PoE 2 Currency for sale on IGGM in advance. Utilize the different functions of various currencies to roll gear affixes or rarity, giving you a higher chance of winning against Abyssal bosses!
