  In Path of Exile 2, Evasion is one of the core defensive mechanics for character survivability. When you open the character stats panel and see 50% Evasion, it may seem intuitive to assume that every attack has a 50% chance to be dodged.

  However, Evasion mechanic is far more complicated than that. It is closely tied to Accuracy, Critical Strike checks, and special compensation systems, with many hidden rules involved. Let's take a look at how Evasion actually works and how to build around Evasion as a defensive mechanic in PoE 2 Patch 0.5.0.

  

  How Evasion Rating Is Calculated?

  Hit Checks

  Similar to Armor, Evasion Rating shown on the character panel is not a fixed value. Instead, it changes dynamically based on the attacker's Accuracy. Evasion percentage shown on the panel is calculated solely from your own Evasion Rating and does not take the monster's Accuracy into account. Therefore, to properly evaluate the benefits of Evasion, you need to understand the average Accuracy of monsters at your current level.

  Unlike Armor, whose performance can vary significantly against different monsters, Evasion provides a relatively stable expected damage reduction against monsters of the same type within a specific level range.

  To achieve an actual 80% Evasion chance against level 80 monsters, you need roughly 60,000 Evasion Rating. This threshold can be reached by a pure Evasion build without relying on Mage Armor;

  If you use a hybrid Evasion and Energy Shield build and have Mage Armor-related modifiers on your equipment, reaching the same threshold is also relatively easy.

  Critical Strike Checks

  Players often assume that if the first Evasion check fails, the character will inevitably take damage, after which the attack independently goes through a Critical Strike check. If that check succeeds, the attack becomes a Critical Strike. However, the actual rules in Path of Exile are different.

  When the first Evasion check is bypassed, the system does not immediately perform a Critical Strike check. Instead, it performs another Evasion check specifically for the attack's Critical Strike hit. If the second check succeeds, the attack will not trigger a Critical Strike and will instead deal normal damage.

  Entropy System

  To prevent players from getting extremely lucky or unlucky for too long and experiencing excessively long streaks of successful or failed Evasion checks, PoE 2 also has an Entropy System. It only applies to the first Evasion check.

  When the first attack occurs, the system generates a random initial value between 1 and 100. Each attack adds Accuracy value to this initial value. If the accumulated result is ≥100, the attack hits and 100 is subtracted, leaving the remainder. If the result is <100, the attack is evaded and the current accumulated value is retained.

  This prevents the extreme streaks of consecutive Evasions or consecutive hits that can occur with completely independent random events. As a result, the actual Evasion rate remains very close to the value shown in the player's stats.

  However, the downside is that even if you stack Evasion to 90%, an enemy will inevitably break through Evasion after attacking several times because of the accumulation mechanic, meaning absolute immunity cannot be achieved.

  Likewise, you will not find yourself trapped in a situation where a monster hits you repeatedly. In melee or high-frequency attack scenarios, 90% Evasion means that damage will occur only after a fixed number of intervals, providing excellent defensive consistency.

  It is worth noting that Entropy System is calculated independently for each attacker. Therefore, when facing multiple monsters, each monster has its own accumulator, meaning you can still be hit by different monsters in succession during actual combat.

  Deflect

  In PoE 2, Deflect applies when Evasion fails and an attack hits, reducing the damage of that attack by a fixed percentage. Unlike Armor, which provides dynamic damage reduction based on the incoming damage value, Deflect has a constant damage reduction ratio, making its defensive benefit extremely consistent.

  If you can raise your Deflect chance to 90% while also reaching more than 50% damage reduction, then even when Evasion is occasionally bypassed, nine out of ten such attacks will deal only half their normal damage.

  If the attack deals elemental damage, the damage will then be reduced further by elemental resistances, greatly lowering the actual threat. The resulting damage taken will be very low.

  Currently, the ways to acquire deflection chance in the game are limited, usually only stacking up to n% of your dodge value as a cap, and requiring a significant investment of PoE 2 currency and talent points, making it difficult to stack.

  How to Build Your Defense?

  Because neither Evasion nor Deflect can provide complete immunity to damage, physical attacks can sometimes penetrate both Evasion and Deflect. At that point, you need additional Life and Energy Shield reserves to absorb the damage.

One is to stack Evasion alone without relying on other defensive mechanics, which is suitable for builds whose position on the passive skill tree makes this efficient.   Some Bosses have special skills that ignore Evasion checks. In these cases, not only does the first Evasion check fail, but the 2nd Critical Strike Evasion check also becomes ineffective.   Evasion Coverage

  After PoE 2 Patch 0.3.0, Evasion now applies to all attack hits. The trade-off is that Boss attacks that previously guaranteed a hit were changed into attacks that cannot be evaded. Overall, the current version is more favorable toward Evasion.

  However, ground-based damage-over-time skills still always hit. These sources of damage are generally not particularly high, so Life and Energy Shield are usually enough to withstand them.

  Range Penalty

  When attacking monsters, Accuracy is affected by distance, but this has nothing to do with your own survivability and only affects offensive efficiency. For bow builds, you can fire additional arrows or use skills that cause projectiles to explode at the end of their travel distance.

  Player spell skills, on the other hand, always hit, so there is no need to worry about distance when using lightning or fire spells.

  In PoE 2 Patch 0.5.0, evasion remains a defensive mechanism with advantages far outweighing disadvantages. It can provide survivability on its own or be freely integrated with energy shields, mana, and other systems. You can flexibly choose the most suitable defensive combination based on your primary skill's passive tree position.
