The initial trailer released a few days ago, which confirmed the launch window for Path of Exile 2 1.0, offered a glimpse of the upcoming new class, but focused primarily on visuals, leaving some specific details unclear.
Fortunately, the wait wasn't long; the developers soon released a deep dive detailing Duelist's skills and potential build strategies.
Although the class's official launch is still some time away, getting an early look not only satisfies your curiosity but also prepares you to master Duelist's playstyle more quickly when the time comes. Here is a breakdown of what to expect.

Unique mechanic: Ready Stance
As you may know, Duelist appears to be the first sword-focused class introduced in PoE 2 so far. The core experience of sword combat lies in the fluid continuity between successive attacks.
To capture this, the development team designed a mechanic called Ready Stance for Duelist. After using certain Duelist skills, you can hold down the input button to keep your blade poised and ready for the next strike.
While your basic sword slash is normally limited in scope and effect, holding Ready Stance transforms it into a lethal AoE slash. This stance can be further upgraded, for instance, into Sand Scour, a different type of stance-based attack.
If you use this to stun an enemy, they enter Sand Stance. Following up with a default attack while they are in this state unleashes a spinning disc of sand blades.

Synergy between skills and stance mechanics
However, it isn't just the default attack that benefits from the stance. Take Perforate, for example: this skill consists of three consecutive thrusts, with the final hit unleashing a drill-like attack that causes bleeding.
If you are in Ready Stance, you can skip the first two thrusts and go straight to the drill attack. Furthermore, the effect is upgraded: it causes multiple small sand-blade discs to erupt from every enemy hit, allowing for rapid crowd clearing.
There are also skills that can be used while maintaining Ready Stance without breaking the stance itself. Take Intimidate, a type of warcry skill: by unleashing a roar at your foes, you not only deter them but also cause your subsequent attacks to knock them off balance.
Another noteworthy mobility skill is Rending Dash. It allows you to dash through groups of monsters while maintaining your Ready Stance, enabling you to reposition and find the optimal angle for an attack.
Sand Stance is your primary mode of combat as a Duelist in PoE 2, but the game allows you to switch to a dual-wielding setup, specifically with swords, to enter Blood Stance.
Unlike other weapon types, dual-wielding swords grants you the ability to parry attacks; following a parry, you can cast Bloody Blade to transition into Blood Stance.
If you incorporate this skill into a full combo, you unleash a lethal wave of blood that inflicts the bleeding status on enemies. Blood Stance also synergizes with other stance-enhanced skills; for instance, combining it with Perforate allows you to release a flurry of small blood blades.
Once enemies are bleeding, you can immediately cast Hemorrhage to drastically accelerate their blood loss. After sufficient blood loss has accumulated, dashing through the enemy ranks with Rending Dash detonates all accumulated bleeding effects, dealing massive damage.
Finally, there is the crucial skill, Cyclone. For PoE 2 Duelist, the key to using this skill effectively lies in combining it with your various stances.
For example, using Cyclone while in Sand Stance allows you to spray discs of sand blades in all directions, greatly increasing your screen-clearing efficiency, making it ideal for farming PoE 2 currency in maps with high enemy density.
Lastly, the ultimate skill World Cutter allows you to unleash a devastating final blow after charging up; its effects can be further amplified through the game's stance mechanics.

Buried Blades mechanic and related skills
After using Earth Rend skill, numerous blades, known as Buried Blades, emerge to slice through the ground and strike enemies. These blades are not exclusive to Earth Rend; they can be combined with other skills to create a wider range of tactical effects.
For instance, when paired with Charged Slash, you can execute a powerful cleave imbued with lightning damage. If you are also in Ready Stance, the slash transforms into a lethal spinning attack that fires outward lightning projectiles.
Switching to a two-handed weapon and plunging the blade into the ground releases three explosive blades. Combining this with Blade Plunge allows you to create an even wider array of blades.

Recommended basic builds
As the overview of skills and mechanics suggests, while the number of new skills is limited, combining them with specific Path of Exile 2 Duelist mechanics opens up a wealth of gameplay possibilities.
To help you get up to speed quickly and save time on theory crafting, PoE 2 developers have showcased two builds for reference.
Bringer of Blades Build
The core of this build involves using Earth Rend supported by Kalm's Madness to generate Buried Blades with maximum efficiency. You then use Blade Conduit to imbue all those blades with lightning energy.
If you want even more blades, you can pair this with Rain of Steel skill to summon a downpour of swords, carpeting the battlefield with blades embedded in the ground.
Scourge Walker Build
While Bringer of Blades build focuses on maximizing the synergy of Duelist skills and mechanics, Scourge Walker Build centers on utilizing specific rare gear, making it an excellent choice for the endgame.
To that end, the build incorporates Oro's Sacrifice, a new longsword introduced alongside the new class. This sword sacrifices physical damage to provide massive fire damage and grants you a new skill called Infernal Step.
This skill ignites enemies but also accumulates stacks of Sacrificial Flame, an effect that deals fire damage to you over time.
Consequently, you need to equip specific PoE 2 unique items, such as Xoph's Blood, to mitigate incoming fire damage. Additionally, you must select high-quality gear for core armor slots to bolster your defenses.
When Sacrificial Flame reaches maximum stacks, Oro's Sacrifice grants you Frenzy Charges; this allows you to weave Bloody Blade into your Cyclone rotation, thereby entering Blood Stance.
These builds represent just a fraction of the gameplay options for PoE 2 Duelist. As more details regarding class mechanics and Ascendancies are revealed, you will be able to discover even more engaging playstyles that suit your preferences!
