GTA 6 Mapping Project Revealed: Say Goodbye to Filler Mountains and Hello to Dense Cities

Category: GTA 6 Posted: Jun 06, 2026 Views: 10

Players, for thirteen years now, GTA Online players have long been familiar with an ironclad rule: no matter where the mission starts, the ending point is almost always Los Santos. Ultimately, this has nothing to do with the size of GTA map, but with the map layout that makes the game increasingly tiring. Therefore, the most basic and urgent expectation for GTA 6 is an expanded map and the addition of new cities.

GTA 5 Map Advantages and Disadvantages Analysis

While GTA 5's map is widely recognized as one of the most iconic and immersive open worlds in gaming history, with each region possessing a unique personality and soul, the map's flaws have gradually become apparent after 13 years of operation in GTA Online.

In GTA 5, the only central city, Los Santos, is located at the southernmost point of the map, while smaller towns such as Sandy Shores, Grapeseed, and Paleto Bay are scattered to the north. These smaller towns are separated by huge mountains or lakes, resulting in players rarely using these open areas for more than 95% of the game time.

These are merely filler elements existing to create the illusion of a larger map, forcing players to endlessly traverse the same few north-south routes year after year.

GTA 6 Map Improvements and Layout

According to the ongoing Grand Theft Auto VI map mapping project, the new map is not only larger than all previous GTA maps combined, but its layout is also more conducive to a more enjoyable gameplay loop.

Vice City is placed in a more central location, slightly to the right of center, surrounded by Hamlet and Watson Bay, comparable in size to Grapeseed and Paleto Bay in GTA 5, and Leonida Keys is not far to the south.

The map is free of massive mountain ranges, and towns are closer together, meaning players will pass through multiple towns and cities as they traverse the map, rather than just highways and barren mountains like in GTA 5.

GTA Online Proves the Importance of Map Expansion

Throughout GTA Online's more than ten-year history, the peak of player activity and community enthusiasm occurred within a specific 18-month window: the period surrounding the release of The Diamond Casino & Resort and Cayo Perico.

On the surface, these two updates are of high quality, naturally attracting a large number of GTA players back; but the deeper reason is that they are the only two updates in GTA Online history to substantially expand the map.

Community feedback also clearly shows that what players really crave is not more vehicles or weapons, but rather a genuine expansion of the boundaries of GTA universe.

For a long-running online service game, what keeps players coming back isn't just good content, but also the development team's promise and hope for further expansion.

The Development Team's Vision and Real-World Clues

Back in 2012, members of GTA development team stated that they ultimately wanted a large world encompassing all cities, allowing players to fly between different cities and revisit their favorite areas. This vision was already present before the development of GTA 6 even began.

Based on currently released official information, their website explicitly mentions Mount Kalaga's location on the border of The State of Gloriana. This suggests that GTA 6's map may not be isolated, and players might be able to travel to The State of Gloriana.

Furthermore, the website and Trailer 2 repeatedly hint at Lucia Caminos's backstory being related to Liberty City, even featuring a truck with Liberty City license plates.

While it's not yet certain that players will be able to visit these areas when GTA 6 launches, it at least leaves plenty of room for imagination regarding the addition of new cities through updates in the coming years.

The Importance of Map Expansion for Players and the Series

If the development team can continuously add new cities to GTA 6 Online, more players will join the game, theoretically extending its lifespan.

Almost all successful online games expand their universes and add new locations over time. GTA, as one of the very few exceptions that has remained almost unchanged for a decade while still achieving success, is largely because of its core gameplay.

For fans of the series, map expansion might be the only way to gain meaningful access to GTA universe without waiting for a new game in over 10 years.

Given the development team's pursuit of perfection in every game, at the current pace, GTA 6 might be 15 years away, meaning we could have to wait 15 years to see Liberty City, San Fierro, or even a revisit to Los Santos.

Hope from Past Reports

Back in 2018, when GTA 6 was first leaked, its codename was Project Americas, and the initial concept was for players to travel between Vice City and various locations in South America.

Although many ideas were later scrapped, this shows that the development team had the idea of expanding the universe from the very beginning.

Furthermore, some journalists have published articles stating that they actually plan to continuously add new maps, cities, and locations over time. Although this has not been officially confirmed, multiple reports and clues from earlier years point to this as a plan set by the development team from the very beginning.

This is precisely why players have such high hopes for GTA 6 and the future of GTA.

Hopefully, Grand Theft Auto VI will truly make Vice City a living map, and IGGM GTA 6 store will provide you with the resources you need in the game, allowing you to navigate it more easily.
