Is AION 2 Cooking Your GPU? High GPU Temps, Stuttering, and Best PC Settings

AION 2 players have started comparing notes over an issue that has nothing to do with loot drops or class balance: how hard the game is pushing their PCs.

One Facebook post sums up the frustration in a single sentence:

“My PC gets very hot in AION 2. I had to lower the settings so it doesn't cook my PC.”

The player then asked whether anyone else was experiencing the same thing, or whether the problem was mainly affecting AMD graphics cards.

The replies make the answer more complicated.

Some players report GPU temperatures in the 50–60°C range. Others describe temperatures in the 70s or higher. Radeon owners are part of the discussion, but GeForce users are reporting their own performance and temperature issues as well.

That is important because the current community evidence does not point to a simple “AMD problem.”

Instead, it suggests that AION 2's PC performance can vary significantly depending on the GPU, CPU, resolution, graphics settings, frame-rate target and—perhaps most importantly—what is happening on screen.

AION 2 PC Requirements: What Does NCSoft Actually Recommend?

The official AION 2 requirements are relatively modest by current high-end PC standards.

Component Minimum Recommended
OS Windows 10/11 64-bit Windows 10/11 64-bit
CPU Ryzen 5 2600 / Core i5-10500 Ryzen 7 3700X / Core i7-11700
RAM 8GB 16GB
GPU GTX 1050 Ti 4GB RTX 2070 8GB
DirectX DX12 DX12
Storage 100GB 100GB
Storage Type SSD recommended SSD recommended
Target 1080p, Very Low 1080p, Low

NCSoft's current global support page lists the Ryzen 5 2600 and Core i5-10500 with 8GB RAM and a GTX 1050 Ti as the minimum configuration. The recommended specification moves to a Ryzen 7 3700X or Core i7-11700, 16GB RAM and an RTX 2070. NCSoft's download page also lists the Radeon RX 470 as a minimum-class option and RX 5700 XT as a recommended Radeon GPU.

There is an important detail here that can easily be missed.

The recommended specification is based around 1080p and relatively conservative graphics settings.

It does not mean a modern RTX 5090 or Radeon RX 9070 XT will automatically run cool when pushed at high resolutions and high frame rates.

Why Can AION 2 Run Hot?

AION 2 is built with Unreal Engine 5, and NCSoft describes the game as featuring a world substantially larger than the original AION, alongside large-scale PvE content and large battles.

That does not mean every scene puts the same load on your hardware.

A quiet outdoor area can be relatively easy to render.

A crowded city, dungeon encounter or large PvP battle can be completely different.

The game may have to process large numbers of characters, animations, effects and environmental elements at the same time. Depending on the scene, the limiting factor can shift between the GPU, CPU and game engine.

That is why simply saying “turn your graphics down” does not solve every AION 2 stuttering problem.

What AION 2 Players Are Actually Reporting About Heat and Performance

Recent community comments give us a much more useful picture than a single benchmark. Players are reporting very different temperatures and performance levels depending on their hardware, settings and where they are in the game.

AION 2 players reporting high GPU temperatures and performance issues on Facebook

AION 2 players sharing different GPU temperatures, hardware setups and performance complaints on Facebook.

Looking through the discussion, some players reported GPU temperatures in the 50–60°C range, while others mentioned temperatures in the 70s or higher under heavier settings or longer play sessions. Several comments also mentioned loud fans, high power draw and the need to adjust settings, fan curves or other GPU settings to keep temperatures under control.

At the same time, not every complaint was actually about temperature. One player using a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, Radeon RX 9070 XT and 32GB RAM reported intermittent stuttering while moving through the world or fighting dungeon bosses. Lowering the graphics preset from Very High to Very Low did not eliminate the stuttering, and the player also reported that frame generation seemed to make the problem worse.

Another player with an i5-14600KF and RX 9070 XT reported around 40–45 FPS in cities and populated areas, while GPU usage stayed around 60–75% and the GPU temperature was roughly 50°C. CPU usage was also reported at around 30–35%, and lowering the graphics settings made little difference.

That is an important distinction. AION 2 can feel slow or stutter even when the GPU is not running at its thermal limit. If reducing graphics quality barely changes the frame rate, the GPU may not be the main limitation. The bottleneck could instead involve the CPU, game engine, asset streaming or another part of the rendering pipeline.

This is also why players should avoid treating every FPS drop as an overheating problem. High temperatures, low FPS and stuttering can happen together, but they are not necessarily caused by the same thing.

AMD Players Are Seeing Issues, But NVIDIA Isn't Immune

The original question about AMD is understandable because several comments in the discussion involve Radeon cards. Some AMD users reported higher temperatures, stuttering or inconsistent results with FSR and Frame Generation, while others said their systems were running normally after adjusting settings.

A separate RX 9070 XT owner reported occasional stuttering when using FSR and Frame Generation. After experimenting with different settings, the player said TSR with VSync produced fewer stutters, although at a lower frame rate.

NVIDIA users are not completely immune either. The Facebook discussion includes complaints from owners of different GeForce cards, including reports of high temperatures, loud fans and performance issues. In other words, the community feedback does not point to a simple “AMD problem.”

The more useful takeaway is that AION 2 performance can vary significantly from one PC to another, even when the hardware is relatively powerful. That makes it worth checking temperatures, GPU and CPU utilization, frame rate and frame-time behavior together instead of blaming one component immediately.

Best AION 2 Settings for Lower Temperatures and More Stable FPS

The goal should not be to turn the entire game to Very Low.

Instead, start with the settings that have the biggest effect on performance.

The goal is not simply to chase the highest possible FPS. A stable frame rate matters more when you are fighting, exploring crowded areas, completing quests or farming resources that help you earn Aion 2 gold. The aim is to find a balance that keeps AION 2 responsive without sacrificing more visual quality than necessary.

AION 2 Setting Starting Point Why
Display Mode Fullscreen / Borderless Test both if frame pacing differs
Resolution Native Preserve image quality
Upscaler DLSS / FSR Quality Reduce rendering workload
Resolution Scale Quality Good starting point for 1080p/1440p
Effect Quality Low–Normal One of the bigger FPS levers
Shadow Quality Low Usually noticeable performance gain
Reflection Quality Low / Very Low Can be expensive in complex scenes
Global Illumination Low / Normal Reduce GPU workload
Mass Combat Quality Very Low / Low Useful in large battles
Player Particle Effects Self & Party Reduces visual clutter
Texture Quality High if VRAM allows Less FPS impact than effects
Frame Generation Test separately Can raise displayed FPS but may affect latency/stutter
FPS Target Stable 60/90/120 Avoid chasing maximum FPS

Current AION 2 settings guides similarly recommend lowering effects, shadows, reflections, global illumination and mass-combat settings first, while keeping textures higher when the GPU has enough VRAM.

1. Cap Your FPS Before You Start Dropping Everything to Low

If your main complaint is heat, this should be one of the first tests.

A GPU rendering 200 FPS does not need to work as hard as one rendering 80 FPS if your monitor cannot display the extra frames.

Current AION 2 guides differ somewhat on how frame-rate limiting is handled in the client, so the safest approach is to use a stable target appropriate for your monitor and hardware, whether through an available in-game option or GPU-side control.

Try:

  • 60 FPS for a cooler, quieter baseline
  • 90 FPS for 120Hz-class displays
  • 120 FPS for stronger hardware and high-refresh monitors

The important word is stable.

A consistent 90 FPS experience is often preferable to bouncing between 180 FPS in an empty field and 45 FPS in a crowded city.

2. Lower Effects, Shadows and Reflections First

If you want to preserve the game's visual quality, do not immediately destroy the texture and model settings.

AION 2 community testing guides consistently identify effects, shadows and reflections among the first settings worth reducing.

A reasonable starting point is:

  • Effect Quality: Low or Normal
  • Shadow Quality: Low
  • Reflection Quality: Low or Very Low
  • Global Illumination: Low or Normal
  • Mass Combat Quality: Very Low or Low

This leaves the game's character and environment textures looking substantially better than an across-the-board Very Low preset.

3. Use DLSS or FSR Carefully

If you have an NVIDIA RTX card, start with DLSS Quality.

If you have a supported AMD Radeon card, test FSR Quality.

Recent AION 2 guides recommend Quality as the starting point, moving to Balanced if performance remains poor at 1440p or higher resolutions.

Do not assume that the highest number shown by the FPS counter is automatically the best experience, though.

Frame Generation can increase displayed FPS while changing input latency and frame pacing. This is especially relevant for PvP.

One RX 9070 XT player specifically reported fewer stutters with TSR and VSync than with FSR plus Frame Generation, although their FPS was substantially lower.

That is only one player's result, but it illustrates why Frame Generation should be tested rather than blindly enabled.

4. Reduce Player Effects During Mass PvP

AION 2 becomes a very different performance test when dozens of players appear on screen.

For large battles, consider reducing:

  • Other players' particle effects
  • Mass Combat Quality
  • Character detail
  • Unnecessary visual effects

Current guides also recommend Identical Player Appearance for crowded content, which can reduce the amount of unique player appearance data the system has to handle.

This is one of those settings where the visual compromise is often worth it.

You want to see the boss telegraph and your own skills.

You do not necessarily need to see every particle effect generated by 50 other players.

What If AION 2 Still Stutters After Lowering the Settings?

This is where you need to stop assuming the GPU is the problem.

If the game stutters at Very High and continues stuttering at Very Low, that is a clue.

Check:

  • GPU utilization
  • CPU utilization
  • CPU temperature
  • GPU temperature
  • VRAM usage
  • RAM usage
  • Frame time

For example, the RX 9070 XT + i5-14600KF report mentioned above showed FPS dropping to 40–45 in populated areas while GPU utilization remained only around 60–75%.

That is very different from a GPU running at 99% utilization and simply being unable to render more frames.

And it is why AION 2 stuttering is not necessarily the same problem as AION 2 low FPS.

Don't Ignore NCSoft's Own Troubleshooting Advice

This is particularly relevant for players experiencing crashes, freezes or instability rather than ordinary FPS drops.

NCSoft's current AION 2 troubleshooting guide recommends verifying Steam game files and temporarily disabling overlays and monitoring software such as Discord Overlay, MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner Statistics Server and third-party FPS overlays when diagnosing crashes.

NCSoft also recommends keeping GPU drivers current. For AMD Radeon RX 9000-series users, its current troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.9.1.

That is worth highlighting because some players use MSI Afterburner or RTSS precisely to monitor temperatures and cap FPS.

Those tools can be useful—but if you're troubleshooting crashes, NCSoft recommends temporarily removing them from the equation.

So, Is AION 2 Actually Overheating PCs?

The answer is more nuanced than “yes” or “no.”

AION 2 can clearly place a heavy workload on modern gaming hardware, especially at high settings, high resolutions and high frame rates.

Players are also reporting stuttering and performance drops on both AMD and NVIDIA hardware.

But the Facebook discussion does not show a universal temperature problem.

Some players report temperatures in the 50s or 60s. Others report temperatures in the 70s or higher. Some Radeon users are perfectly happy with their systems, while others are troubleshooting stutters.

That variation matters.

70–80°C on a modern GPU is not automatically a dangerous temperature, and the safe operating range depends on the specific GPU model and its thermal design. What matters more is whether temperatures remain within the manufacturer's limits, whether clocks begin to throttle, and whether cooling behavior is normal.

For most players, the first experiment should be simple:

  1. Cap the FPS.
  2. Lower effects and shadows.
  3. Use DLSS or FSR Quality.
  4. Reduce other-player effects during mass combat.
  5. Check CPU and GPU utilization.
  6. Update drivers.

If your temperatures drop and the game remains smooth, you have probably found a practical solution.

That can make a noticeable difference during everyday activities, whether you are working through quests, fighting in crowded areas or farming resources for Aion 2 kinah for sale. The goal is not maximum FPS at any cost, but a stable experience that lets you play without constantly worrying about heat, stuttering or sudden frame drops.

If the FPS still collapses while both CPU and GPU utilization remain surprisingly low, however, lowering the graphics preset another five levels probably isn't going to fix the underlying issue.

And that is perhaps the biggest takeaway from the current AION 2 community discussion:

This does not look like an AMD-versus-NVIDIA story. It looks like an optimization story that players are still trying to solve one PC configuration at a time.
