With NBA 2K27 officially launching on September 4th, the official team has been announcing several major adjustments to MyTEAM. Among them, Player XP system is undoubtedly one of the most noteworthy features of this update. Through this new system, each player card will have the opportunity to continuously grow. Players can accumulate experience by using and developing players in matches, further improving the card's attributes and abilities. Next, I will detail the specific gameplay of Player XP system and how it will affect NBA 2K27 MyTEAM gaming experience.
What is Player XP System?

Simply put, Player XP is a growth mechanism that allows each player card to accumulate experience through actual gameplay, unlocking attribute bonuses and special abilities.
In previous 2K games, the strength of player cards was basically fixed from the start - what you got was what you were, with limited improvements possible through Evolution or Dynamic Duo. In 2K27, a player gains XP simply by adding a card to your roster and playing it on the court.
More importantly, Player XP is linked to the player's account, not the card itself. This means that if you sell a leveled-up card through the auction house or use it in the exchange, and then acquire the same card again, its experience progress is fully retained; you don't need to level it up again from scratch - making the entire card economy more flexible.
How to obtain Player XP?
XP Acquisition Methods
Acquiring Player XP is very straightforward: simply play your player card in matches to gain experience. The better your on-court performance - the more impressive your scoring, rebounding, assists, and defensive stats - the faster your experience points accumulate.
Furthermore, NBA 2K27 introduces Player XP Boost and Multipliers, which can further accelerate leveling up. If you have core players you particularly want to develop, these items are very useful investment options.
Levels and Upgrade Paths
Based on currently available information, each player card has an independent experience bar. When the bar is full, the card levels up, and players can choose one of several upgrade options to enhance it. After selection, the experience bar resets to zero, requiring players to accumulate experience again through matches to reach the next level.
Currently, it's unclear how many levels each card can reach, or whether unlocking all options at the current level is mandatory to advance to the next. This means that future roster planning may no longer solely focus on high-rated players, but will require a comprehensive consideration of player growth potential, upgrade costs, and actual role within the team.
Upgrade Rewards
This is the most exciting, yet also the most worrying part of the entire Player XP system. Based on official information and gameplay footage leaked by the community, upgrade rewards include the following categories:
Attribute Boosts
The most direct reward - a direct increase in a player's attribute value. For example, Stephen Curry's Dark Matter card at Level 1 offers upgrades including +3 Dunk and Extra Stamina.
All Hot Zones

Hot Zones refer to areas where a player has a high shooting percentage, providing an extra bonus for shots taken from within these zones. Making all of a card's shooting zones Hot Zones means that the card will have a percentage bonus from any position on the court. If a Dark Matter Curry starts with All Hot Zones, its offensive threat will be almost unstoppable.
Start Game With Takeover
Another highly controversial reward is starting the game with Takeover. In MyTEAM, Takeover is a temporary burst of ability triggered when a player is on fire, usually requiring a series of excellent performances to activate. Once activated, it temporarily boosts multiple attributes. If the game starts with a takeover, it means you have an overclocked player from the jump ball.
Permanent Additional Turbo Meter
Having a permanent extra stamina bar in fast-paced games means your player can run longer and sprint more times than their opponent, giving them an advantage on both ends of the court.
Extra Badge Slot

Player XP also adds an extra badge slot to a player. Badges are a core mechanism that determines a player's playing style and in-game performance; an extra badge slot means you can configure a more comprehensive skill set for your player.
It's worth noting that as Player XP system gives player cards a longer-term growth value, players' planning of MyTEAM resources will become more important. Besides investing time in developing players, rationally allocating NBA 2K27 MT to supplement the roster and acquire needed players will also become a crucial part of roster building in the new game.
Summary
NBA 2K27's Player XP system is undoubtedly a bold innovation. It gives every player card growth value, no longer just consumables in the exchange. For casual players, this means they can gradually develop their favorite players without blindly chasing the absolute best cards. For hardcore players, this system offers greater strategic depth - how to allocate experience and prioritize upgrades will become crucial considerations when building a team.
However, there are also concerns about an overly strong start. If NBA 2K27 fails to consistently provide challenging objectives and attractive rewards in subsequent updates, players may lose motivation due to premature completion.
Regardless, the introduction of Player XP system marks a significant step forward for MyTEAM, moving from gacha mechanics to character progression. Whether it will become a benchmark design for the series' future or simply accelerate data inflation remains to be seen after NBA 2K27's official launch.
