GTA 6 Wanted Level System Explained | How Heat Indicators and Police Memory Work?

In Grand Theft Auto series, police chases are a constant part of the gameplay, but the police AI has often been rather comical. All you need to do is drive into an alley, wait for a short while, and you can escape. When you show up in front of the police again, they will have completely forgotten that they were just chasing a notorious criminal.

It is precisely because of these issues that the official team has built the most intelligent police system in the series for GTA 6. The way police behave and the systems surrounding law enforcement will force players to become smarter criminals. Let's take a look at how this system is designed to work.

GTA 6 Wanted Level System Explained | How Heat Indicators and Police Memory Work?

Police Memory

The official team wants to move away from the old system where you could instantly lose the police and they would immediately forget about the protagonist. Instead, they want the police to have a much longer-lasting memory.

To achieve this, the official team has introduced a brand-new mechanic called heat on top of the existing Wanted Level system.

In GTA 6, whenever players gain a Wanted Level, one or more red Heat Indicators will usually appear below the wanted stars. These indicators can take several different forms.

In the short clips shown by the official team, Jason and Lucia have several indicators, including being identified by CCTV cameras, couple, clothing, and weapons. There is also a Vehicle Indicator that has not been shown in detail.

This indicator is triggered when the police identify the vehicle you are using. All of these indicators represent persistent memories retained by the police. If you fail to deal with them, not only will it become harder to escape the police in the first place, but you may still be quickly recognized by officers even after your Wanted Level disappears.

Ways to clear Heat Indicators:

  • CCTV: Destroy CCTV footage inside the store.
  • Couple: When playing as a couple, have Jason and Lucia split up.
  • Clothing: Change into a second outfit stored in your personal vehicle.
  • Appearance: Wear a mask or helmet before committing a crime.
  • Weapons: Hide or discard weapons that were seen by the police.

This system could potentially appear in GTA 6 Online as well, although its implementation may present some challenges. If you are a four-person team robbing a bank, for example, Heat could potentially reveal how many people are involved. You may need to split up during the escape in order to safely get your GTA 6 money to the extraction point.

Wanted Stars

Solid White Star

A solid white star indicates that the police have a direct line of sight to you. At this point, your top priority is to disappear from the cops' view. If the police presence is too heavy to shake, you may need to fight your way through.

Flashing White Stars

Once you successfully break the police's line of sight and enter the state where you are trying to lose them, the solid white star will change into flashing white stars, similar to previous games in the series. This indicates that the police are searching for you.

Hollow Stars

GTA 6 Wanted System Hollow Stars

Lucia appears to have just robbed a bank and escaped, and she has Hollow Stars, meaning the outer ring is white while the center remains black.

This is because the alarm has been triggered, but the police have no idea who they are looking for, while Lucia has no active indicators. As a result, she can simply ride past the police without being recognized and can even flip them off in the footage without facing any consequences.

Red Stars

When Jason and Lucia have already escaped the police but are still within the area where the crime took place, the stars will turn red. A Red Radius will appear on the minimap, indicating the area where the police are searching.

There is also a larger, lighter red circle around the outer area. Leaving both zones at the same time is the most effective way to completely shake the pursuit. However, it is not mandatory. You can still lose the police while remaining inside this area, although leaving both zones will make the process easier.

Heat Zone

This red wanted area will eventually turn into a community-sized Heat Zone. Within this area, the police do not know your exact location, but they have a general idea of who they are looking for. If Jason or Lucia approaches the police without clearing any indicators, the officers will recognize them and the pursuit will begin again.

When you rob a small store, Heat Zone is roughly the size of a small neighborhood. The police will establish a Perimeter around the robbed store to prevent you from returning.

At a 6-star Wanted Level, however, the police will conduct a Mapwide Search. This not only makes the initial escape more difficult, but also makes it extremely difficult to clear your Heat after the pursuit has ended.

A significant change in GTA 6 is that the police no longer appear on the minimap. Jason and Lucia need to use Focus to avoid the police. It allows players to see the police through walls.

Witness System

Someone must witness your crime before the police can be alerted. Anyone can potentially become a witness. Your actions will therefore have more realistic consequences. Crime reports can typically be triggered through phone calls, alarms activated during a robbery, or stolen vehicles equipped with tracking devices.

The reactions of NPCs in GTA 6 are also more realistic than in GTA 5. When Jason walks down the street carrying a 2-handed weapon without aiming at anyone, NPCs will notice the weapon but will not panic or start screaming. Instead, they will quickly move away.

If the police see you, they will first issue a warning. If you are holding a long gun with both hands and take a firing stance, however, the situation will escalate, and you will be marked as a criminal.

GTA 6 is very different from GTA 5 in many ways, which is understandable considering that the 2 games are separated by 13 years and two months. GTA 6 is moving toward a more realistic and immersive experience, and if you want to survive in this world, you will need to learn how to become a smarter criminal.
