The release of CoD Modern Warfare 4 is drawing near, and the launch roadmap has now been revealed. Beyond the official launch on October 23, the most notable highlight is the arrival of Season 1, which follows just about two weeks later.
The timeline - spanning early access, launch maps and modes, post-launch content additions, and the transition into the first season - is quite tightly packed.
Below, we break down the release sequence and upcoming content updates to help you plan your CoD MW4 experience in advance.
Pre-load Preparation
As you are likely aware, Campaign, DMZ, and the full Multiplayer mode will become available in stages between October 16 and October 23.
The development team encourages players to jump into the experience as early as possible, ensuring they are fully ready to dive in when the game officially launches, which is why early access is positioned at the very beginning of the roadmap.
For PC players, pre-loading begins on October 15 at 9:00 AM (Pacific Standard Time); getting your files ready ahead of time will help minimize wait times.
As the early access launch approaches, expect more information regarding Operators and other promotional content to be released, so stay tuned.

Launch Maps
At launch, Ground War will feature three maps: Wolves Stadium, Forest, and Imjin Farmland.
Wolves Stadium was previously available during the beta phase, while Forest is an entirely new Ground War map. Imjin Farmland further expands the scale of the battlefield.
Kill Block also appears prominently among the revealed maps, suggesting it will be a key component of the launch content. Standard multiplayer maps include:
- Cachette
- Coal
- Lithium
- Lotus
- Mumbai
- Munition
- Nautical
- Reactor U92
- Rooftops
- Sentry
- Silkworm
- Transit 213
- Smuggler (Gunfight)
- NYC (Gunfight)
- Café (Gunfight)
- Library (Gunfight)
These maps span a wide variety of settings and styles; players will surely be delighted and satisfied by the sheer volume of maps available at launch.
For those who prefer small-scale, precision-based gunfights, you can jump straight into 2v2 combat from day one.
In short, whether you prefer advancing across large-scale maps or engaging in close-quarters skirmishes, the launch map pool in MW4 offers plenty of options.
If you're worried about not being able to learn all these maps quickly after launch, try picking a few that interest you most and practicing in the low-pressure environment of CoD MW4 Bot Lobbies.
Launch Modes
As for new modes, Hijack, Inflation, and Ground War: Combat Outpost all appeared during the beta phase - if you participated, you'll already be familiar with their pacing when MW4 officially launches.
Collateral leans closer to a Search and Destroy style where you must acquire your own weapons; it carries a flavor reminiscent of modes found in CS: GO or Black Ops 4, placing a strong emphasis on economy management and objective completion.
Classic modes are also fully represented, including:
- Frontline
- Hardpoint
- Search and Destroy
- Kill Confirmed
- Domination
- Team Deathmatch
- Free-For-All
- Gun Game
- Gunfight
It's worth noting that the inclusion of Gun Game and Gunfight really rounds out the selection of modes available at launch.
These modes cover everything from objective-based play and kill confirmed mechanics to free-for-alls and fast-paced gunfights, catering to a wide range of player preferences.
Experienced players who are highly confident in their skills can jump straight into high-intensity competitive modes, while newcomers might prefer more relaxed modes to familiarize themselves with the maps and weapons in CoD MW4.
With a mix of both new and returning modes, there will certainly be plenty to play right from the start.
What's coming after the official launch?
As mentioned earlier, Modern Warfare 4 will continue to receive new maps and modes following its official launch on October 23.
First up is Shipment map, arriving on October 27. Based on the released images, the map features a foggy, dark atmosphere, resembling an abandoned urban area complete with scattered vehicles, which marks a significant departure from the brighter visual style seen previously.
Players who enjoy high-intensity, close-quarters combat on small maps won't have to wait long; Shipment will be available just days after the game's launch.
Just two days after the launch of Shipment, Possession Mode will go live, followed shortly thereafter by Infected Mode on October 30th.
The pumpkin icon associated with Possession Mode suggests a Halloween theme, leading us to speculate that it may be a limited-time game mode.
Infected Mode also fits perfectly with the Halloween season, offering players the chaotic fun of shifting team allegiances.
It appears that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will avoid any content droughts post-launch, thanks to a well-structured plan from the development team.

Season 1 Schedule
MW4 Season 1 is confirmed to launch on November 6, barely two weeks after the game's official release.
Season 1 will integrate with Warzone and continue to introduce new maps and content, ensuring the season remains fresh throughout its duration.
This Season 1 update arrives quite early, and it is scheduled for a Friday - a departure from the typical Thursday release pattern. While specific details are currently limited, the upcoming content is certainly worth keeping an eye on.
