CoD Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Bounty System Controversy | Will PvP Overshadow PvE?

DMZ will be a major focus of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 this year. It is a PvPvE extraction mode that was first introduced in an experimental version in MW2. In 2026, the development team has refined the mode and expanded its systems.
The latest official trailer reveals more about the mode's story missions and content while also providing a brief look at a new feature called Bounty System. This system could prove controversial because it places a greater emphasis on PvP combat.

Health Regeneration Mechanics
In a June interview, the developers stated that players have a base maximum health of 150 HP. After taking damage, players can retreat behind cover and wait for their health to regenerate gradually.
However, in the official Bounty System showcase, the demonstration character named Beigewhale consistently appears to be missing one-third of his health, with no automatic regeneration back to full health. One-third of his health bar is also covered by red stripes, suggesting that something is preventing automatic regeneration.
During an intense firefight, the character is downed and then revived, but he still has one-third of his health missing. This could mean that when a player is downed and subsequently revived, a portion of their maximum health becomes unavailable.
If a player is fully eliminated and then brought back, they may lose two-thirds of their health bar instead. Indeed, the trailer later shows a player with two-thirds of their health missing.
Restoring the missing health will likely require healing items. The game features recovery items such as bandages and first aid kits.
In the original DMZ experience, players could often push forward after downing an enemy, only to find that the opponent had already been revived with full health. This effectively eliminated the numerical advantage gained from the initial fight. Under the new system, revived players will be in a weaker position.
Defibrillators also appeared among the rewards shown in an earlier mission trailer. They may allow players to revive teammates instantly, or perhaps prevent them from suffering a health penalty after being revived. Their exact effects remain to be seen.
The showcase also demonstrates that players can use stim shots in DMZ to accelerate health regeneration. This confirms that health does regenerate, but the process appears to be very slow under normal circumstances. Stim shots can significantly speed it up.
There may also be perks or other ways to accelerate recovery. If health does not regenerate automatically for an extended period, such as 30 seconds, stim shots could become much more important and fundamentally change the pace of firefights.

How Bounty System Works?
The official presentation does not directly explain the system's detailed mechanics. Instead, it shows how the feature works in practice. The system appears to track which players initiate combat.
Becoming a Target
Even if you do not fire the first shot yourself, your squad can still be drawn into combat if one of your teammates attacks first. Your bounty will then begin to increase. Eventually, your squad will be marked on the map, making your location visible to nearby enemies.
After killing another player, you can inspect their dog tag, which displays information such as their identity, time of death, and bounty amount. One example shown in the trailer is a bounty worth 250,000 in-game cash.
However, killing an enemy is not enough to claim the bounty. You must successfully extract with their dog tag. Otherwise, you will receive no money, and the kill will have been for nothing.
Bounty Hunters
Players can also become bounty hunters. By visiting a designated station and paying a small fee, they can reveal a target's bounty and precise location on the map.
This resembles Most Wanted contract. The mechanic could discourage indiscriminate killing because players who accumulate large bounties will continually attract hunters looking to claim their rewards.
If players die after investing in their Operators, they may lose their progression and trait tree, potentially having to acquire them again. As a result, many players will likely prefer to avoid unnecessary fights.
Leaderboards

Bounty System also features a leaderboard that ranks the top 50 Most Wanted players. It refreshes over the course of the day, with the overall rankings resetting weekly.
The player in first place can carry a bounty worth as much as one million in-game cash. Bounty hunters have their own leaderboard, which tracks the cash they collect. Together, these systems are designed to keep players who repeatedly hunt other players in check, preventing them from operating without consequences.
Players who engage heavily in PvP may appear on both Most Wanted Board and Bounty Hunters Board.
The system places a clear emphasis on PvP. The host expressed concern that this could attract cheaters to some extent, since the feature makes player names visible, and cheaters often seek attention.
Cheaters could potentially exploit the system by climbing to the top of Most Wanted Board and attracting other players who want to hunt them down. Once those players get close, the cheaters could eliminate them instantly.
Cheaters might even appear on both leaderboards at the same time. Nevertheless, the system could also help identify players who are genuinely focused on PvP.
The main point of controversy is that the system emphasizes PvP so heavily, even though many players prefer a PvE experience. However, introducing a completely PvE-only option could undermine the core features that make Most Wanted and bounty-hunting systems distinctive.
Vulture Mechanic

Vultures serve as a visual signal that someone has failed to extract. They circle above the bodies of players who have died and remained in the area for some time.
In other words, if you approach an area and spot vultures circling overhead, you will know that at least one player has died there. You can then investigate the location and search for loot. Even if some dog tags have no bounty and are worth nothing, the bodies may still contain valuable items.
On the other hand, vultures could also signal a trap. Other players might deliberately camp near a corpse, waiting for someone else to approach and investigate.
The exact delay before vultures appear, their activation distance, and how long they remain in the area have not yet been explained in any reliable detail.
It is also unclear whether vultures will appear when a player is killed indoors. If an area contains a large number of unlooted player corpses, will more vultures gather overhead?
Overall, both Bounty System and the health regeneration mechanics are interesting additions. Once players engage in PvP, they accumulate bounties that attract other players looking to hunt them down. At the same time, PvP becomes more rewarding because players can earn substantial amounts of in-game cash.
The apparent intention is to encourage PvP-focused players with active bounties to hunt one another, since targeting players without bounties offers little incentive. This approach somewhat resembles an alternative to the aggression-based matchmaking system in ARC Raiders. It will be interesting to see how these mechanics perform in Modern Warfare 4 DMZ.
CoD MW4 is introducing some interesting mechanics to DMZ mode, and PvP encounters are likely to become more frequent; you can buy CoD MW4 bot lobbies to practice your aim and find your favorite weapon loadouts, helping you come out on top in gunfights.
Dying in DMZ mode results in the loss of your Operator's progress, so you must utilize your weapons and game mechanics effectively to avoid elimination.
